🛒 Black Friday Shopping & the Brain🧠 Black Friday feels like the ultimate shopping event. But is it really just about the deals? Or is there Psychology involved? We give our perspective... 1️⃣ The Prefrontal Cortex vs. The Amygdala: Your prefrontal cortex is the rational, decision-making part of your brain, but during an exciting sale, it’s often overpowered by the amygdala, which handles emotional responses like fear and excitement. Marketing tactics like “Only 1 left in stock!” or “Ends at midnight!” are designed to fire up your amygdala, making you act impulsively out of FOMO. 2️⃣ The Dopamine-Rewards Loop: When you grab a big discount, your brain releases dopamine, which creates a fleeting sense of happiness. The catch? That high fades fast, leaving many people chasing the next deal for another hit. 3️⃣ The Role of Colours: Ever noticed how Black Friday ads often use red, black, and yellow? These colours aren’t random, they’re scientifically proven to grab your attention and create urgency!!!!!!!! (Like these exclamation marks) 4️⃣ Timing Tricks: Sales don’t just happen on Black Friday anymore. “Early Black Friday” sales are designed to create anticipation and a sense of competition, even weeks before the actual day. Post-Black Friday price drops? They exploit your regret over missing out, tempting you to spend even more. Our Tips? 🧠 #1: Before making a purchase, force your brain to pause. Need or want? Did you plan to buy this before the sale? Is it really a deal? Compare prices online and consider if you could find it cheaper at another time. How does it fit your life? Will this genuinely add value, or is it just a dopamine rush? ⏳#2: Wait 24 Hours. Let your amygdala’s excitement die down and allow your prefrontal cortex to kick in. 💰#3: Decide how much you can spend before the sales start and stick to it. 🖤#4: Beware of #BNPL (Buy Now, Pay Later) which might seem like a lifesaver, but it’s designed to make spending feel painless. Before using it, calculate the total cost of repayments and what you'll have to go without for coming weeks or months. 👨👩👧 #5: Educate others, especially younger ones, who can be more vulnerable to marketing tactics or overspending. 🛑#6: Look out for tactics like:“Only 2 left!” Which is designed to increase urgency. “Up to 70% off!” ...The “up to” is key as most items won’t be discounted that much. 📅 #7: If a product doesn’t feel urgent before Black Friday, it probably isn’t urgent at all. Black Friday spending doesn’t just impact your wallet. Financial stress can lead to Increased anxiety - Worrying about repayments and bills. Relationship strain - Arguments over spending choices. Workplace burnout - Stress from outside life often spills into work performance. Are Australian workplaces leaning too heavily on HR to manage sensitive employee challenges? 🤔 Recent studies reveal that a majority of HR professionals feel unprepared to handle sensitive employee mental health & wellbeing conversations, yet they’re increasingly being relied upon to do so. This can expose companies to confidentiality breaches, liability risks, and claims of bias - especially if the same HR person is later involved in a performance review or exit process. The reality? HR teams aren’t counsellors. Asking them to step into roles beyond their training isn’t just unfair; it can compromise the care employees receive. Plus, with no external mental health support, we’re left wondering: who does HR turn to when they need help? At We Lysn, we’re dedicated to filling that gap. Our confidential, secure platform connects employees with skilled mental health professionals, letting HR focus on what they do best while ensuring teams get the support they need. It’s time we rethink the role of HR and get serious about prioritising true mental health and personal wellbeing support in the workplace. Let’s put our people first. 👥 #WorkplaceWellbeing #MentalHealthAtWork #WeLysn #HR #Humanresources Get in touch to learn more! 4o

💡 Leaders, did you know? One of the most impactful ways you can support your team’s mental health is by ensuring they truly understand how confidential your workplace well-being program is. At We Lysn, we take confidentiality seriously—your employees’ names, booking details, and session notes are 100% private, even from you. Employees need this assurance to feel comfortable seeking support, and you can play a huge role in creating this understanding. Here are some practical tips leaders can share with their teams to lower the barriers and encourage program use: Reinforce Confidentiality Regularly: Remind your team that their participation in the well-being program is completely private. Assure them that We Lysn doesn’t disclose personal details or session content to anyone in the company. Highlight Accessibility Options: Let your team know We Lysn offers phone and video sessions, so they can access support from a private, comfortable location. This flexibility makes it easier for employees to connect without the concerns of attending in person or "being seen". Encourage Proactive Use: Support employees in seeing mental health care as a proactive choice. Using these resources builds resilience and helps them manage stress better—benefiting both them and their families. Connect Wellbeing with Workplace Benefits: Share how better mental health leads to a stronger, happier team. When employees feel empowered to seek support, the result is fewer sick days, improved safety, and a more positive workplace culture. Encouraging employees to access mental health support is a win-win: it’s good for them, and it’s a long-term investment in the health, productivity, and morale of your team. 🌱 #MentalHealthAwareness #WorkplaceWellbeing #WeLysn
