The incredible skill of a Mater craniofacial surgeon has reconstructed the face of a baby who miraculously survived a rare flesh-eating infection. Dr Diana Kennedy has already performed 10 facial surgeries on Patrice Mazuba, who developed a life-threatening noma neonatorum infection just weeks after he was born at Mater Mothers’ Hospital. “This is a rare gangrenous disease that can develop in babies – especially pre-term babies – and can be fatal if left untreated,” Dr Kennedy said. “Thankfully, noma neonatorum is extremely rare in Australia. This is the first case we know of that Mater and Queensland Children’s Hospital have treated.” Patrice weighed just 1.1kg when he was born on 21 August last year and also fought a blood infection and encepthalitis while was cared for in Mater’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit. Mum Eliza Karubandika said: “Last year we didn’t know if he would even survive. Now he will be with us at Christmas, opening lots of presents.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gJWBHdYb #materqld #lifesaving #medicaladvancement #healthcare Children's Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service

An 18-month-old born with a genetic condition that affects only 20 people worldwide has undergone a ‘life-changing’ operation thanks to a Mater surgeon.   Ocie Ni Dheasmhunaigh was born at South Brisbane’s Mater Mothers’ Hospital with IMAGe syndrome, a condition that includes characteristics of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), metaphyseal dysplasia (a genetic bone disorder) and adrenal hypoplasia congenita (a disorder that affects the adrenal glands). Ocie weighs just 4kg and is unable to stand due to hip dysplasia. Orthopaedic surgeon Dr David Bade recently performed two surgeries at Mater Children’s Private Hospital Brisbane on Ocie to repair her hip dysplasia, which will enable her to finally stand unassisted and eventually take her first steps.   Read more about Ocie’s story here - mater.li/Ocie
