Can we future-proof the suburbs 🌏 Year 11 students explored this big question as part of #UQ's Young #ChangeMakers program. Students worked with #UQ’s Planner in Residence, Stephanie Wyeth to develop sustainable solutions for Brisbane’s suburbs, tackling challenges like ageing housing and infrastructure, shrinking greenspace, climate change, planning controls, and changing demographics 🏠🌲Together, they reimagined a future where Brisbane is greener, smarter, and more sustainable💡🌿 As well as providing valuable and fun learning experiences, these interactive workshops by UQ School of Architecture, Design and Planning give high school students awareness of planning as a great career choice, helping to address the national shortage of planners. ✅ ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gEteKfh3 #purposeledprofessional #fairerandgreenercities #cityshaper #communitybuilder #becomeaplanner #createchange Planning Institute of Australia UQ Engineering and Computing Ali Cheshmehzangi Stephanie Wyeth The University of Queensland

Dr Silvia Micheli and Associate Professor Antony Moulis from UQ School of Architecture, Design and Planning are exploring pioneering approaches to city design that combine living, work and sustainable production to tackle climate change and enhance community wellbeing🏡 The team researched design strategies for urban production in West End, Brisbane, in collaboration with practitioners from Phorm Architecture + Design and talented #UQ students and alumni. Academics from universities in Melbourne and Seoul also collaborated to see how solutions could be applied to cities at different scales to solve common problems. Their research forms part of a book called House Precinct Territory: Design strategies for the productive city and has been shortlisted for the prestigious Architecture Australia AA Prize for Unbuilt Work 2025 👏 🎥 Watch to find out more https://lnkd.in/gYMpGUrf Silvia Micheli, Antony Moulis, Liza Neil, Paul Hotston, Stephanie Wyeth, Planning Institute of Australia, Lily Éire Parsons, Kelly Nortje, Australian Institute of Architects, Lara R. @Thomas Webster UQ Engineering and Computing

How can we solve the housing crisis? Housing affordability in 2024 is the worst on record, with too few affordable dwellings available to buy or rent. Add to this a historical disinvestment in the supply of social housing and a growing rate of homelessness, and Australia is staring down the barrel of a housing crisis that will impact generations to come. Dr Dorina Pojani and Stephanie Wyeth joined other UQ experts to discuss this important topic. https://lnkd.in/gcd-6Nxs

Are Brisbane’s green areas a waste of space? Some consider them underutilised opportunities for profitable ventures, and in some cases, that may be true. But to label them a waste is misdirected. https://lnkd.in/g8iftYPj

“Is that a brain probe?” asked some curious teenagers. “It looks like a Mars rover,” commented another. “Could you tell me what the weather might be tomorrow?” asked others. These were just some of the remarks made by fascinated Brisbane residents who recently met “RUMI-01,” an affectionately named microclimate data-collection device designed and built by UQ researcher Helen Caswell. https://lnkd.in/gU5i8c8b
