Can we future-proof the suburbs 🌏 Year 11 students explored this big question as part of #UQ's Young #ChangeMakers program. Dr Silvia Micheli and Associate Professor Antony Moulis from UQ School of Architecture, Design and Planning are exploring pioneering approaches to city design that combine living, work and sustainable production to tackle climate change and enhance community wellbeing🏡 The team researched design strategies for urban production in West End, Brisbane, in collaboration with practitioners from Phorm Architecture + Design and talented #UQ students and alumni. Academics from universities in Melbourne and Seoul also collaborated to see how solutions could be applied to cities at different scales to solve common problems. Dr Paul Dielemans thesis focused on eighteen schools designed in a “moderately modern” version of an Interwar Functionalist architectural style by Frank Cullen for the Roman Catholic Church in Queensland. How can we solve the housing crisis? Housing affordability in 2024 is the worst on record, with too few affordable dwellings available to buy or rent. Add to this a historical disinvestment in the supply of social housing and a growing rate of homelessness, and Australia is staring down the barrel of a housing crisis that will impact generations to come. UQ PhD graduate Dr Dilrabo Tosheva has been granted a prestigious Fellowship with Harvard University’s Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture (AKPIA). The esteemed appointment is to conduct advanced historical research in Islamic art, architecture, material culture and archaeology, and will allow Dr Tosheva to complete a book she is writing based on her UQ PhD thesis.
