About us

Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) is the national body representing planning and the planning profession. Through education, communication and professional development, PIA is the pivotal organisation serving and guiding thousands of planning professionals in their role of creating better communities. PIA currently represents approximately 4800 members nationally and internationally, and connects with 7500 planners annually. We are governed by a National Board of Directors and managed by a professional administration. We are a member-based organisation with its management complemented by volunteers, who support and contribute to our activities on various levels. Our vision is "Leading effective planning for people and places". We will realise our vision by: Advocating for Better Planning: Our advocacy and policy development targets the outcomes and processes needed to better plan for the future, and the challenges we face. Developing High Quality Planners: We build the capacity and capability of the planning profession to deliver better planning for communities. Supporting the Profession: We support and nurture planners throughout their career to create a strong, connected planning community. ------ Authorised by M. • The Queensland Government has today announced changes to Queensland's planning framework as per the election commitment of unlocking 10,000 social and community homes on church and charity-owned land by 2044. These announcements are in line with PIA’s advocacy for the need for balanced solutions at the recent Ministerial Housing Taskforce Cabinet meeting. PIA supports social and affordable housing being treated as one type of community infrastructure. PIA cautioned against a one-size-fits-all approach. The proposed changes, announced today, strike the right balance, and are the direct result of PIA's strong advocacy for good planning. PIA is particularly pleased to see progress towards streamlining the planning scheme amendment process, which we have championed as part of our State Election Platform. 👏 Swipe 👉 across for more details. PIA members will receive a more detailed explanation in your inboxes this afternoon! 📥 More details are also available on the government’s website here https://lnkd.in/gam28PQG Sean Cullen | Nicole Bennetts RPIA | Julie Brook RPIA

Minister for Planning; Lands; Housing; Homelessness; at Government of Western Australia

BOOK TO INSPIRE NEXT GENERATION OF PLANNERS Last week, it was brilliant to join Cameron Leckey MPIA, Planning Institute of Australia WA President and Mt Hawthorn Primary School Principal Leon Wislon, when the Institute donated the book Ava Tanner, the City Planner, to the Mount Hawthorn Primary School library. Ava Tanner, the City Planner, introduces school kids to urban planning and civic engagement. As Western Australian Planning Minister, I hope that this book encourages and inspires the next generation of urban planners who will play a critical role in boosting housing supply and planning new, safe and sustainable communities across the State. Western Australia continues to lead the nation in driving planning reforms that cut unnecessary red tape to accelerate the delivery of housing across the State – to provide more housing diversity and choice.

  • PIA was proud to award a Fellowship to Tasmanian State President Michael Purves MPIA (Fellow) at last Friday's 2024 PIA TAS Celebration of Planning Awards Ceremony in Hobart.   Mick has been at the forefront of significant reform during his impressive career, including being instrumental in developing the inaugural northern regional land use strategy. His passion for planning is undeniable. He is an incredible professional that has given so much of his time to better planning outcomes and to supporting his colleagues.   Mick is an incredible champion for the planning profession and is a very worthy recipient of a Fellowship.   Congratulations Mick!
