  • We are pleased to announce that STH, in partnership with PSC, have recently been awarded the new Metro North Mental Health Stabilisation Unit at the Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital (RBWH). This vital mental health facility will provide a more immediate response to patients experiencing a wide range of mental health conditions, especially those in crisis, and will help address the mental health needs for the community. This is an important project for STH as we continue to grow our Queensland presence, and sees us working with Metro North Health as a principal consultant and Lead Architect. Moreover, it will be another key project in our ever-growing portfolio of mental health focused projects, and a further demonstration of our expertise in this area. Our STHPSC delivery team of David Brian, Bill Kaloudis, Alex Brislan, Scott Holmes and Sergio Sarri look forward to delivering another successful project within Queensland. #sth #rbwh #metronorthhealth #mentalhealth #architecture #MNHHS

  • We're proud to be working alongside the ARM Architecture team in creating this crucial new facility for SA Health. This expansion of the Flinders Medical Centre will provide 98 new beds, 4 new operating theatres, a 14 bay recovery area, and most importantly, will ensure that the local Bedford Park and wider Adelaide communities will continue to receive the highest possible standard of care. #architecture #healthcare #southaustralia

Last month, ramping went down to the state’s best result in 17 months. While it’s a promising sign, there’s a long way to go. And there’s a lot more work to do - and we’re getting on with that job. These results don’t just happen on their own. We are building a bigger health system and it’s delivering results. Building more capacity by making investments such as the largest ever expansion of Flinders Medical Centre. In the south, we’ve already opened 64 beds this year, and now the new 98-bed building (pictured below) is under construction at Flinders.

  • STH Director Natalie Pitt is currently at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore and is a juror for the INSIDE Public Buildings category. This marks the first time that STH has been invited to judge at WAF, following our win last year in the INSIDE Health + Fitness category for the Murrenda Aged Care Home in Wantirna, Victoria. With 10 remarkable and diverse buildings nominated from all over the globe, Natalie has noted that it's both fascinating and invigorating to learn of the inspirations behind the projects. These projects serve as tangible examples of how thoughtful and considered public architecture can change local environments and communities. Both STH and Natalie are very appreciative of the opportunity to judge at WAF, and we feel honoured to be part of such a major architecture event. #WAF2024 #architecture #singapore #STH

  • Murrenda Residential Aged Care Home returns to the spotlight a year after winning the INSIDE: Health & Fitness Award at World Architecture Festival. This project stands as a testament to STH's dedication to creating environments that enrich the ageing experience through meaningful, context-driven design. Inspired by the vibrant colours of native Australian birds found in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs, Murrenda’s exterior design features a striking mosaic of light and textured tiles. The colour palette flows seamlessly into the interior finishes, creating accents throughout the residence. Personalised spaces are coupled with familiar, homelike touches and features unique mental health supportive design, using colour-coded zones to promote wayfinding and themes of nostalgia and familiarity throughout.

  • As the designers of the St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne Mental Health, Alcohol, and Other Drugs Hub, we are heartened by the positive impact this facility is making for a vulnerable patient cohort. Each element of the design has been carefully crafted to support patient well-being and safety, from the eight spacious cubicles to the built-in safety features that ensure both security and peace of mind. With innovations like weight-resistant ceilings and secure storage, the environment balances clinical needs with compassionate, human-centred design. This hub is more than just a space—it’s a lifeline for those experiencing a mental health crisis. We are incredibly proud to contribute to a space that offers hope to those in need, reflecting our dedication to creating healthcare environments where every detail supports healing.

Guardian Australia was given access to a restricted section of St Vincent’s Melbourne to explore why other hospitals are replicating our approach to Emergency Care. The St Vincent’s Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drug Hub - located inside our ED - is one of six funded by the Victorian Government as part of a $32 million effort to better support Victorians experiencing urgent mental health, alcohol and drug issues. Since opening, our Hub has treated about 10,000 patients. Read the story here: https://lnkd.in/gvvjss3R

  • STH - Silver Thomas Hanley Director Natalie Pitt heads to Singapore to judge at this year's INSIDE: Public Buildings Category at World Architecture Festival following last year's INSIDE: Health & Fitness win for Murrenda Residential Aged Care Home. The project has seen Natalie attend the World Architecture Festival for two years running – last year as a nominee and eventual winner, and this year as a judge. "It’s an exciting opportunity and a true honour for me to be afforded the chance to judge at this year’s WAF and connect with our industry peers from across the globe" says Natalie. "As always, architecture is a remarkably inspiring and stimulating field to work in, and STH look forward to seeing great examples of this at WAF 2024." The festival kicks off November 6 to 8 – best of luck to all the entrants!

  • Last night on World Mental Health Day, Bill Kaloudis represented STH on the panel at the 'Designing Recovery: Lived Experiences, Support, and Spaces in Mental Health Care' event. Craig Wallace from Lived Experience Psychology offered valuable insights from a consumer's perspective, while Bill shared his expertise on mental health from a designer’s point of view. The panel also featured two clinical mental health experts, Jennifer Glass and Dean Bilton. Here are some of the comments from attendees: "It was instructive to hear genuine lived experience of the mental health system, but in addition the panel discussion on design (including co-design) provided worthwhile insights into delivering patient-centric mental health facilities." "The lived experience presentation is extremely valuable to hear firsthand. Good to know there are some experienced advocates within the industry, we need more understanding and action to see how we can overcome design challenges our industry face daily. The concept of "positive risk" is my key takeout from the discussion." "Continued governing body research into best practice can only be positive with concept rooms developed for designers to use as a base agreed design. Space allocation, special joinery, access to light and views, furniture approved supplier options, anti-ligature standards etc" "More like this please." An excellent event discussing important topics in mental health design 👏 Dean Bilton Kingsway Group AU Crown Furniture

  • We’re excited to share the completion of the Centre for Eye Research Australia’s (CERA) new research and clinical trials space, led by STH - Silver Thomas Hanley. This state-of-the-art facility will significantly enhance Australia's capabilities in world-class eye research and clinical care. Our collaboration with CERA included: — Developing an Operating Model to optimise essential processes. — Crafting a Functional Design Brief to outline design principles, outcomes, and a detailed Schedule of Accommodation. — Conducting an Accommodation Options Analysis to assess existing infrastructure alongside offsite alternatives. STH worked closely with CERA to deliver a contemporary facility that prioritises the Melbourne cityscape and brings together research, clinical trials, and cutting-edge laboratories. Spanning 3460m², the fresh new space supports world-class eye research and patient care, featuring flexible workspaces, reception areas, staff breakouts, and advanced imaging facilities.
