Design at Macquarie | Sydney Meetup Our design teams and experts partnered with Sydney Design Thinking to host the annual State of Design Nation event in our new event space, ILUMINA.   Amongst a night of celebration and reflection, I was reminded of how fortunate I am to get to design and lead passionate designers for a living 🙏 It’s been an incredible journey over the last 12 months of connecting and amplifying our Design discipline across Macquarie and beyond and volunteering our skills to help uplift those in our local communities through our involvement with ABCN (Australian Business Community Network), SEND (Social Enterprises Needing Development) and PCYC (Police Citizens Youth Club).   The highlight of the night came from our two Australian Good Design Award judges – Ben Crothers and Nila Rezaei – who urged the room to reflect on what it means to Design with Impact and shared their highlights from this year’s entries ranging across a symphony of criteria, from the Captivating and Critical to the Cheeky and Curious. Each entry reminded us of the possibility of making positive, social impact through good design and left us walking away inspired and motivated. Thank you, Ben and Nila.   I wanted to extend my gratitude to Ben Pecotich from Dynamic4 for inviting us to partake in this annual SydDT tradition, Alan Chen and Diana Ayoub from Sh8peshifters for their awesome graphic recording of the night (not all because they made me look handsome), and my amazing team – Jennifer Murphy, Kristine Souksamrane and Jenny Han for organising this electrifying and memorable event. Massive thank you to everyone who attended and reached out afterwards.   If you missed it or wish to relive the magic, you can find the video link here https://lnkd.in/gck5NzHj   P.S. If your interest was piqued by our exciting initiatives and Design at Macquarie journey, keep your eyes peeled for a Design Blog coming in the next few months where I will be going into more depth.

Are you running any workshops or strategy sessions this November? If you want to bring a new and engaging approach, consider hiring Sh8peshifters for our graphic facilitation service. We work with you to help turn a typical workshop into a memorable and active session. We listen, we draw, and by the end of it everyone is on the same page. What’s more, you and your team will walk away with a lasting artefact that is a real-time synthesis of the entire workshop! That’s much more efficient than reading through text-dense reports just to understand the insights. Key benefits of our Graphic Facilitation service: - Enhanced idea generation and problem-solving - Improved team engagement and participation - Clear visual representation of complex information - Accelerated decision-making processes We’ve recently used graphic facilitation with the NSW Police Force, NSW Health, Central Coast Council, University of Technology Sydney, KidsXpress and many other teams. DM me to chat about how we can support you. #GraphicFacilitation #Innovation #Creativity #TeamCollaboration #Sh8peshifters

I coach, train & work alongside leaders to solve problems that matter🔹Leadership programs with design thinking, regenerative innovation, wellbeing & purpose🔹Designer, coach & founder at Dynamic4. Let's collaborate!

We celebrated all things design and reflected on the state of the design nation at Sydney Design Thinking (SydDT) #106 last Wednesday night. Ben Crothers and Nila Rezaei shared their highlights, observations, and insights on what they saw as a couple of the judges for this year’s Good Design Awards and some of the trends. This has been an annual SydDT tradition since 2018 and it’s always a crowd favourite. This one was even bigger than usual with 220 people turning up for the fun. A massive thanks to Ben and Nila for their great talk. I had so many people telling me how they loved their content, insights, and presentation styles. I loved their perspectives and emphasis on how we can just do good design to help create positive impacts. In all of our work. To close things out I reminded the audience that every design and business decision we make gets us closer to the world we want to see. Or not. Let’s do good design. Thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a fun night. Couldn’t make it or just want to relive it? It’s on Youtube now. https://lnkd.in/gck5NzHj This event was brought to you by Design at Macquarie GroupSh8peshifters, and Dynamic4. Design at Macquarie hosted us in the new and very impressive ILUMINA space. Steve Packham, the Chief Design Officer of Macquarie’s Corporate Operations Group shared a bit about how they’ve been investing in design and been building their design practice and community over the past year. It was great collaborating with Design at Macquarie for this event. Thanks to Jenny HanJennifer MurphyKristine Souksamrane, and Steve for all the work on the Macquarie side to bring it together… to Kelvin Weng for taking photos, Lucy Zhao and the rest of the volunteers… and the AV guys for making everything run so smooth. The graphic recording this month was done by Alan Chen and the video includes an impressive timelapse. This initiative is a collaboration with Alan and Diana Ayoub from Sh8peshifters and their Think Visual/Sh8peshifters Morning Meetups community. SydDT is a friendly environment for people to practice their live graphic recording skills. It’s also awesome seeing the growing number of people clustering at our meetups to sketchnote together. This was also Design Connection #3… another in our design megameetup series – a collaboration with Kevin WilkinsSylvia Luk, and Lydia Bradshaw from CCX, Adam Faulkner from EUX, Susan Wolfe, and Verawaty Chan. And of course the rest of the SydDT crew Kylie MageropoulosKate Linton, and Lucas Mara. Our next meetup is SydDT #107/Design Connection #4: 2024 Reflection & Celebration on Thursday, 28 November… and brought to you by Atlassian and Dynamic4. Grab your ticket before it sells out! https://lnkd.in/gzyrneaN #PhotoMeanderings #EventMeanderings #SydDT #designthinking #innovation #leadership #wellbeing #regen #purpose #design #learning #community #sydney #meetup

Looking forward to returning to Canberra on Wednesday 23rd October to give a talk about our book "Designing Tomorrow – Strategic Design Tactics to Change Your Practice, Organisation & Planetary Impact", this time for the Enterprise User Experience (EUX) Meetup. Thank you to Adam Faulkner and Susan Hansen for the invitation! My co-author Steve Baty unfortunately has another commitment, so I will be doing this talk solo. But I'll still be bringing some books to give out to some lucky winners. #EUXCBR #designingtomorrow BIS Publishers Harm Kessel, van Sh8peshifters Alan Chen Diana Ayoub

  • Sketchnoting is a great thinking tool that allows us to remember more, make connections and be creative. For kids, it's an a powerful medium that helps them learn and opens up countless possibilities. If you've got kids and are around Sydney these school holidays, would you sign them up to learn how to leverage this skill? #kidsworkshops #schoolholiday #visualthinking #visuallearners #creativity

Journaling has long been touted as a good practice by psychologists. Its benefits include stress reduction, self-reflection, emotional processing and an overall improved mental health condition. But what happens when we combine the practice of journaling with the power of sketchnoting? 📔🎨=💡 For my daughter (Arya) and I, this has been somewhat of an evolving practice. Since she was 5, I encouraged Arya to sketchnote whenever we went on a holiday or road trip. Slowly but surely, it has become an activity that we do together, allowing us both to reflect on our shared experiences, as well as notice how we see things and process things differently. For me, visual thinking has been part of my practice since childhood. It has helped me to learn, and develop my mental processing abilities. Looking at Arya’s visual notes, it’s clear that as a child, her mind processes things in an incredibly non-linear way. She bounces from thought to thought, reflecting on seemingly random moments in her experience. But if I take a step back, I can see the gathering of ideas that form a narrative which crystallises her memories, making certain moments stand out strongly. This preview into her mind is a privilege and continues to surprise me. These two pages are recent sketchnotes we did while on a road trip for Arya’s 8th birthday. She had no prompts, and created the layout on her own. I drew mine alongside her at the cafe, then at the holiday house we stayed at. If you’re keen to do this along with your kids and equip them with a way to boost their creativity, I’d love to know. Diana and I are considering running Sh8peshifters kid’s workshops in the school holidays so it would great to know how many of you Sydney-based folks are keen to try this out in person 😊 #sketchnotes #journaling #creativity #kidsworkshops #healthyhabits #visualthinking
