  • Exciting Visit to Western Sydney Wanderers FC Recently, our participants and staff had an amazing time visiting the Western Sydney Wanderers Headquarters. They enjoyed a tour of the training ground and facilities, guided by Scott from the Wanderers. Scott showed us around the different football fields, the team gym, grandstands, and the viewing platform from the commentary box. He also answered questions about the Wanderers, running a football team, the Matildas, and even Nathan Cleary! We were thrilled to receive a few footballs and our participants got to showcase their skills on the pitch. Some were shy at first, but eventually, everyone had a kick, enjoyed a great workout, and some even scored (when they managed to get past Marina in goals!). It was a fun-filled day and a fantastic opportunity to engage in an insightful, immersive, and exciting activity within our Western Sydney community. A big thank you to everyone who helped organize this event. We look forward to more outings like this in the future! #football #westernsydney #westernsydneywanderersfc #inclusion

  • Wonderful that our colleagues Thomas Calma and Clement Meru attended the Strengthening Social Cohesion Conference, representing Participate Australia and SydWest Multicultural Services. We look forward to applying the learnings to the work we do and collaborating with the many sector partners who attended. #SSCConference

Day 2 of the Strengthening Social Conference complete, and another day full of insights and learnings. Some of the themes that resonated on Day 2 were: ~ the need to meet people where they are (not just physical, but emotional, culturally, and politically). ~ that there is no equality without justice ~ when thinking about objective journalism, we should interrogate who defines 'objectivity' ~ being mindful that 'social cohesion' can be weaponised or politicised as a tool of division ~ and perhaps the most consistent theme was that of contact theory, that is, intergroup connectedness can reduce prejudice and is a building block of social cohesion (so let's put down the phones!) There were so many great speakers, but some highlights were the panel discussion between Angelica Ojinnaka-Psillakis and Vikram Murthy, moderated by Catherine Madziva, hearing Rumbi Mabambe talk about the role of youth in safeguarding democratic resilience, Mariam Veiszadeh calling out the need for diversity all levels of media (including the decision makers who choose what stories we hear), hearing Tim Dixon provide a global context on how Australia stacks up, and hearing Craig Foster AM speak passionately his views on social cohesion and social justice, and the need for each of us to speak up and insist on truth telling and accountability. Finally, I loved Jihad Dib's comments about refusing to change his name when moving into political life. A reminder that the goal isn't to assimilate to the dominant culture, rather to celebrate our differences and recognise them as one of greatest strengths as a country. #SSCConference

  • On Friday we opened the doors of our Croydon hub to the community for an annual open day. It was an exciting event with over 100 people coming through to see our centre, meet the team and learn about our services. This was an important day for us a as it as it not only allowed us to meet new people and showcase our approach to supporting people with disability to meet their goals in meaningful ways, but the open day also enabled us to take a moment and celebrate the things we achieve, our people and our community. It was an honour be visited by Member for Reid, Sally Sitou, who took the time to learn about Participate Australia and SydWest Multicultural Services. We were also proud to launch our artist's wall, with our inaugural artist with disability, Bridget Kelly, showcasing her talents. We want to extend a big thanks to all of the team who helped coordinate the day, all of our community members, families and other organisations who took the time to come say hello. Our biggest thanks to our participants, many of whom helped run activities, present about our programs, cook the sausage sizzle and who generally made the day a huge success with your enthusiasm and amazing energy! #celebration #community #artistswithdisability #openday

  • Great work Nel and the whole PrideAbility crew. Participate Australia is so happy to support #PrideAbility as we know there is a huge gap in supports for #LGBTQIA+ people with disability. Thank you also to Angela Tsoukatos and Thomas Calma for your support as campaign champions. And to Elfa Moraitakis, the SydWest Multicultural Services Directors and everyone else who supported PrideAbility this #GiveOutDay. Great work GiveOUT Australia for a record breaking year! #PrideAbility #philanthropy #pride

Thank you to everyone who supported PrideAbility this #GiveOutDay2024 by donating or sharing information about the group. PrideAbility is a support group for LGBTQIA+ people with intellectual disability, autism and psychosocial disability. It is one of few groups of its kind and the positive impact it has on members (and the rainbow community) is profound. Until PrideAbility is able to secure sustainable funding, support from initiatives like GiveOUT Day, run by GiveOUT Australia, means that the group survives and grow, reaching more people with disability who need the support. Nelissa, a First Nations queer woman and PrideAbility member, wanted to pass on her thanks, on behalf of the group. If you want to learn more about PrideAbility, if you want to talk about becoming a regular supporter, or if you know anyone who might want to become a member, please reach out. I'd love to have a yarn. #PrideAbility #pride #LGBTQIA+

  • Participate Australia and SydWest Multicultural Services were happy to work with Kaleidoscope Focus on the #R4NED resource about emergency management and response. Please take a moment to explore the resource that was developed with the support from NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

A new disaster and emergency management resource is now available online at https://bit.ly/47T5fcz The R4NED site has been developed to help NDIS participants and providers prepare for, manage and recover from emergencies and disasters like fires, floods, severe storms, heatwaves and pandemics like COVID-19. It is fully accessible, free, and provides a range of resources in different formats, alongside resources developed specifically for First Nations communities. The R4NED resources, developed by Kaleidoscope Focus in consultation with community and sector representatives, were funded through the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission grants program. #NDISCommission #NDIS #emergencymanagement #onlineresource #grantprogram
