  • Remembering Cyclone Tracy: 50 Years of Resilience and Recovery This month, we reflect on a pivotal moment in Darwin's history—Cyclone Tracy, which struck in the early hours of Christmas Day, 1974. The cyclone claimed 71 lives, injured over 600 people, and destroyed nearly 80% of the city, leaving an indelible mark on our community. In the face of devastation, Darwin International Airport became a vital lifeline. Over five days, it facilitated one of Australia's largest airlift operations, evacuating more than 25,500 people—primarily women and children—to safety. Relief flights simultaneously brought critical supplies, medical aid, and rescue teams to the city. To mark the 50th anniversary of this defining event, Airport Development Group, in collaboration with Global Headquarters, has released More Than Just Being There, a short documentary sharing personal stories and highlighting the airport's critical role in the recovery efforts. “This documentary honours the lives lost, the resilience of survivors, and the extraordinary efforts of those who came together in a time of immense need,” said Tony Edmondstone, CEO of Airport Development Group. “It’s a tribute to the courage and determination that rebuilt a stronger Darwin.” Cyclone Tracy not only reshaped Darwin but also transformed disaster preparedness at Darwin Airport. Lessons learned led to advancements in communication systems, partnerships with emergency services, and robust emergency response protocols—efforts that continue to guide disaster management today. We invite you to watch More Than Just Being There and join us in remembering the resilience of Darwin and the enduring strength of its people.

  • Cyclone Tracy: A Story of Resilience and Hope We're proud to share the trailer for More Than Just Being There, our short film commemorating the 50th anniversary of Cyclone Tracy.
