With only 13% of women in construction, our mission is to inspire, educate, and empower them to seize these opportunities, driving us toward a future where gender equity is the standard, not the exception. We believe that by nurturing young talent and challenging existing barriers, we can create a more inclusive and diverse industry. Our commitment is to transform the landscape of construction by providing the tools, resources, and encouragement needed for women to thrive and excel.     "If women are set on wanting to join the construction industry or if they are interested…I'd say 100% join, I've had no regrets", Site Engineer Emily Asson tells us. At Sydney Metro, we're focused on empowering women to consider education and careers in construction. Since the start of the project, more than 8,000 women have helped deliver Australia’s biggest public transport project. A diverse workforce is a valuable asset and generates better outcomes. As Project Director Alia Karaman says in the video below, “what women bring to the workforce and particularly what I'd like to say I bring is a different outlook, is the way we look at problems, the way we solve problems". Winnie wan With a double degree in architecture and civil engineering, I have chosen a career in construction, where I find immense fulfillment in transforming ideas into tangible structures. My journey began with a fascination for building things, and over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working on a variety of projects, from residential, hospitality and commercial fit outs.   What excites me most about construction is the opportunity to create spaces that impact people’s lives positively. And in construction, you never re-live the same day twice, there are always new challenges ahead, but being part of the solution is incredibly rewarding.   I strongly recommend people to consider a career in construction, to explore this dynamic field.   • The month of November was nothing short of incredible! We are thrilled to share what NexGen has been up to as we continue breaking barriers and building a more inclusive construction industry. November saw us launch our Primary School Program, engaging over 200 bright young minds with stories like 'This Girl Built That' and 'I Want to Be an Engineer.' The feedback from teachers and students was heartwarming! Our executive director, Lauren F. had the privilege of speaking to TAFE graduates, encouraging them to pursue their dreams in construction, and we delivered impactful sessions with Canterbury Girls High School, which led to students wanting work experience opportunities. At Trinity Grammar School, we focused on breaking biases with over 40 young men, showing them that construction is for everyone. It was so rewarding to see students inspired to explore work experience. Finally, Lauren F. was a panelist on the Diversity & Inclusion Panel at CathWest Innovation College, where the panel tackled real issues and provided practical advice to help employers support women in construction. It’s been a month of action, not just words! and we are so proud of what we’re achieving together.

    What are the next generation of females looking for in construction and property? The questions below were asked by year 10 students at Canterbury Girls High School yesterday during a session led by NexGen and NECA NSW. 1. Is your role stressful? 2. Have you ever felt discriminated against for being female? 3. How much does it cost to go to university? Stress in the construction and property industry. What’s important to take away here is that this next generation of women are seeking harmony in work and life. They have witnessed their parents and carers be incredibly stressed in work and how that has impacted their relationships at home, and they don’t want to repeat that. These ladies are seeking roles that are manageable so they can have a healthy life. I wish I had that wisdom in Year 10! Discrimination in the construction and property industry. My honest answer is yes. I have faced discrimination, and this continues to happen to folks who fall into any identification outside of the historical representation of construction and property roles. My next response was that you will face discrimination. It’s not a matter of if but when. The important thing is that you find the courage to address it, and make it known that those behaviours are unacceptable, and they will not be tolerated. Find an employer that has your back and supports you in creating a safe and respectful workplace. If we don’t speak up the change will not happen. Cost of education is a crisis for our young people. The difference in this next generation is that they don’t think education is worth the debt that they would leave university with. They see value in being able to work and have experiences simultaneously. How can our businesses consider this? Perhaps it’s by recruiting talent that haven’t followed the traditional education pathway but have real world experiences. So my questions for the business owners reading this... ▷ How are you and your organisations working to reduce stress for your employees? ▷ How are you providing resources for your team to stand up against discrimination and have the tools to navigate influencing and changing unacceptable behaviours? ▷How are you making the roles your organisation offers financially equitable for young people? While these workplace behaviours and cultures may have been seen in the past as ‘nice to haves’, these are front and centre in mind for the future leaders and will determine where they choose to work. Deep gratitude to Lauren F. and the NexGen team for organising events like this and for supporting me to share my winding career journey with young women. Shout out to Jane Ewing who is a trailblazer and ultimate empowerment leader of women stepping into their power with NECA NSW.     Today, on International Men’s Day, we take a moment to reflect on the invaluable contributions men make to our workplaces, families, and communities. This day isn’t just about celebration—it’s also about addressing the unique challenges men face and fostering a culture where everyone can thrive. At NexGen, we’re committed to driving progress, not just for women but for all individuals. True equity means understanding and supporting men as well, especially when it comes to: - Mental Health: Men often feel the pressure to "be strong" and may struggle to seek help. Let’s normalise vulnerability and create environments where it’s okay to ask for support. - Work-Life Balance: Men face their own challenges in balancing careers and family responsibilities, especially as societal expectations around caregiving evolve. -Breaking Stereotypes: From leadership roles to parenting, we need to challenge outdated ideas of masculinity that limit men and hold back progress for everyone. This International Men’s Day, we’re celebrating the men in our organisation and beyond who inspire, mentor, and lead with compassion and authenticity. We also recognise that equity is a shared journey—it’s not about lifting one group over another, but about creating spaces where everyone is valued for their contributions.     Ambassador Spotlight! Meet Caitlin See! My journey into construction has not been straightforward! I started out working in property, first as the assistant to a Director of a real estate agency, and then in building asset management. Behind the scenes I also completed a degree in Communications and Public Relations. Through my building management role, I worked with a few project managers on refurbishment projects, and it really sparked my interest as a career. So, I went and completed a post-grad degree in Project Management and made a career side-step to Project and Construction Management in 2018. From starting out as a Project Coordinator and moving through the ranks to Senior Project Manager, I've had the opportunity to work on an awesome variety of projects including from retail, commercial, hospitality, government, residential, fit-out and new-build, and ranging in value from $30K to $40M. What I love about the industry is that every day is different, and the excitement of always working with new people on new projects means that you're constantly engaged and challenged. Seeing something progress from drawings on a page to a fully constructed, operating building is pretty awesome too! #NexGen #ambassador #Inspire #Educate #Empower #changemaker #construction #womeninconstruction
