About us

At the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), we are committed to supporting aspirations of First Nations peoples and removing barriers to ensure full and equal participation in the social and economic life of Australia. We leverage our partnerships and relationships to ensure First Nations voices are heard. We support the Minister for Indigenous Australians, Senator the Hon Malarndirri McCarthy, and work to influence policy across the entire Australian Government. We liaise closely with State and Territory governments, peak bodies and service providers to ensure Indigenous programs and services are delivering for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We recognise each community is unique. Our regional presence extends across Australia with staff based in each state and territory. Our staff work collaboratively and in genuine partnership with communities to ensure policies, programs and services address their unique needs. Areas of focus include health and wellbeing, education, employment, economic development, culture and heritage, land and the environment, housing, community safety, Closing the Gap, supporting the Indigenous voice co-design process, and constitutional recognition. NIAA is a flexible, diverse and inclusive workplace and our people are the heart of the NIAA. The NIAA shared values support our positive, inclusive and delivery orientated culture: • We respect multiple perspectives • We are professional and act with integrity • We invest in each other’s success • We are authentic • We deliver with purpose.

  • Applications for SES100 Round 2 close tomorrow! For more information or to apply, visit: https://lnkd.in/gTCpgEU2

Applications for the latest SES100 Band 1 and Band 2, Round 2 are now open. The SES100 initiative supports the government’s commitment to boost First Nations employment across the Australian Public Service. In 2022, 44 First Nations people worked in Senior Executive Service (SES) roles. That number has almost doubled in the two years since, largely due to the success of the program’s first round. The growth reflects significant progress toward the Australian Government’s target of having 100 First Nations leaders into senior APS positions by 2024-25. The initiative also includes wrap around supports delivered in a culturally safe manner, as well as professional development pathways to successful applicants. The Yawarra program for SES officers provides tailored coaching, mentoring, and leadership training to ensure long-term success in their roles in the public service. A joint partnership between the National Indigenous Australians Agency and Australian Public Service Commission, this initiative is now accepting applications for SES100 Round 2. With more than 1,000 new Indigenous ranger jobs, the first round of the Indigenous Rangers Program expansion has been a huge success. We’re opening another grant round in 2025, working towards delivering over 800 new ranger jobs across the country. You can have your say on Round 2 by completing the survey at niaa.gov.au/rangers-survey by 10 January 2025. #WorkingonCountry #Indigenousrangers #IndigenousProtectedAreas

  • Senior executives from across the public sector play an important part in the Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme by delivering Personal Acknowledgements to eligible Stolen Generations survivors. Through a Personal Acknowledgement, a survivor can have their story about removal and the impact it has had on them acknowledged by a senior government person, and receive a personalised and genuine acknowledgement of the resulting harm and trauma. Gary Rake, CEO of the Australian Building Codes Board, told a recent gathering that being a senior government representative has been a powerful and important experience, with lessons for his leadership approach in the public sector.
