This year NAB colleagues volunteered more than 3,500 hours with The Salvation Army Australia, helping some of the most vulnerable Australians. This time of year adds extra stress to budgets for many, and organisations like The Salvation Army are more important than ever. We are proud to share that ahead of the festive season our colleagues, alongside the NAB Foundation, have raised over $300,000 for the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal to provide much needed essentials for Aussie families.

Sextortion is a form of online blackmail scam where someone tricks you into sending sexual images to them and threatens to distribute the images if their demands aren’t met. NAB is sharing actionable intelligence about this horrific crime with the Australian Federal Police-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation. As Chris Sheehan told The Age's John Silvester recently "We know that self-harm, including suicide, can occur within hours or days of the first blackmail threat". Read more below about: 🔎 How sextortion works 🦹 The broader scam environment 🧑💻 How we’re using our capabilities to keep our customers as safe as possible 🤝 The role of public-private partnerships to combat serious and organised crime. The eSafety Commissioner also plays a key role preventing sextortion through educational resources for parents, teachers and schools about the warning signs, practical steps to take and case studies. It also partners with different organisations to help remove naked or sexual images that have been shared online without consent.

If you haven’t heard of it before, the Oration is an annual event run by the Disability Leadership Institute and facilitates a thought-provoking discussion. Each year a prominent disability leader shares their perspective on disability leadership, where it is going and what it looks like. The 2024 Orator is Dr Scott Avery, professor of Indigenous disability health and wellbeing in the School of Public Health, University of Technology Sydney. Join us by tuning into Big Ideas on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio National tonight at 8pm (AEDT) where the Oration will be broadcast in full. When NAB's Maria Sereno Spozetta 🏳️🌈 (Principal Inclusive Design) first migrated to Australia, she opened a joint NAB account with her then-partner – a woman. It was something that she was not able to do when living in the Philippines. "It made me feel seen. As a queer woman of colour living with cognitive disability and, as a customer, it showed me there’s space for inclusion,” Maria said. At NAB, Maria's role is focused on making things more inclusive for customers. "We assume everyone can use a keyboard or a mouse. Or that we all can understand complex instructions. But that’s not the case. "My job is to build a more complete picture of our customers so we can design in a way that meets our customers’ needs holistically." Today is International Day of People with Disability. Read Maria’s story and more about NAB’s focus on inclusion here.

Across Australia, locally led organisations work tirelessly to ensure their communities can withstand and recover from natural disasters. NAB Foundation recognises the essential work of these groups, announcing $600K in funding to 26 groups through its Community Grants program. Rural Aid is one of these organisations, working across the country to safeguard farming and rural communities before, during and after natural disasters. Rural Aid CEO John Warlters said the funding will help them deliver life changing support during a farmer’s hour of need. “Australia’s farmers are the lifeblood of rural communities. With the help of the grant, we can deliver farm recovery events across Australia, with our team of volunteers lending a hand to rebuild both the land and the livelihoods that are impacted by natural disaster.” Find out more about NAB Foundation’s Community Grant recipients here.
