🌟 We are thrilled to celebrate the success of the InterUni Datathon which saw 5 data science societies UNSW Data Science Society (DataSoc) Sydney University Data Society (SUDATA) Macquarie Association of Computing Students (MACS) Monash Data Science Society (MDSS) DSCubed (Data Science Student Society) join hands to create the launch of this Datathon! 🌟 Over two exciting days from 14th to 15th September, students from across the two cities competed to find the best recommendations to improve fraud detection through data analysis and modeling. This was the first time such an event has taken place, and we couldn't be prouder of the organising team for their incredible efforts! 📈 Breaking records: With 32 teams, 150+ participants and 170+ pizzas eaten, we held the first of its kind collaboratory datathon in Australia between data science societies and can't wait to grow even further, including more states and data science societies across the country. 🙏 A huge thank you to our amazing event volunteers from both Melbourne and Sydney for all your hard work behind the scenes. What an unforgettable weekend at the Inter-University Datathon! 🎉 Over two days, students from Monash University, University of Melbourne, UNSW, University of Sydney and Macquarie University collaborated to tackle a data challenge inspired by real-world scenarios: identifying and understanding fraudulent activities causing significant revenue loss for a company. Bringing together the brightest minds from these universities was nothing short of inspiring. The energy, creativity and collaboration over those two days left me in awe. A massive shout-out to Hasan Quraishi and the MDSS Data & Insights team for their exceptional work in creating the dataset from scratch and hosting insightful workshops. Your dedication was the backbone of this event 🙌 We couldn't have done it without our amazing event volunteers from both Melbourne and Sydney. Thank you for your hard work behind the scenes in making this event a success. And of course, to all the participants who brought their A-game, I hope you walked away with new insights and friendships! Now, here's a story that perfectly captures the spirit of the event. Our winning team was, quite literally, the most random team assembled: • One member was the first person to sign up. Talk about eagerness! • Another didn't let initial hurdles with selection stop them, and reached out to us on Instagram. • One had to be reassigned on the day because their original team was reorganised. • Another was reallocated the night before after their initial team backed out. • And one couldn't find a team at their own university, so we paired them with this crew from Monash University. Despite coming together at the last minute, their combined skills and determination led them to victory. It just goes to show that when you embrace the unexpected, amazing things can happen 🏆 To our collaborating university clubs — UNSW Data Science Society (DataSoc), Sydney University Data Society (SUDATA), Macquarie Association of Computing Students (MACS) and DSCubed (Data Science Student Society) — thank you for reaching out to the Monash Data Science Society and joining forces, making this collaboration a smashing success. Reflecting on the incredible journey of bringing the MDSS x DataWaves series to life! 🌊 From ideation to realisation, this event series has been a rewarding experience filled with valuable lessons. We navigated some challenges along the way, from ensuring seamless event logistics and tech runs to managing the finer details that brought everything together. But it was these very challenges that pushed us to sharpen our approach and create something truly special for the Monash Data Science Society community. I am beyond proud to share that the DataWaves series was one of our most successful events to date. With over 150 attendees on campus, the turnout was extraordinary, reflecting the growing interest in the transformative role of Data and AI. Massive kudos to the MDSS events and marketing team for their incredible efforts in bringing this event to life, as well as our amazing event volunteers who played a vital role in ensuring everything ran smoothly on the day.
