About us

MATES in Construction is a charity established in 2008 to reduce the high level of suicide among Australian construction workers. It is an industry-led approach to an industry problem that helps workers on the ground and in their workplaces, to seek help. We lose a construction worker to suicide every second day. We also know that construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work. Through its award winning awareness raising program MATES in Construction is working towards halving the number of construction workers lost to suicide over the next 10 years. Last week MATES in Construction NSW CEO, Brad Parker attended the Coffs Harbour Annual Building Trades Charity Bowls Day 2024 at Park Beach Bowls Club Coffs Harbour. For three years now MATES in Construction has been the recipient of funds raised at this event. The day is hosted by F M Glenn Constructions in partnership with the MBA NSW. “It’s a great, fun day of the local Building & Construction Industry and the Coffs Harbour community coming together to support better mental health and well-being, whilst providing much needed valuable funding for MATES in Construction to put boots on the ground …MATES HELPING MATES, STRONGER TOGETHER…I want to thank all those who participated and gave generously and a big shout out to the Team at FM Glenn Constructions and the Master Builders Association of New South Wales”.

MATES Big Lap raised over $127,000 for registrations and fundraising, and just over 8 laps around Australia with over 124,000kms logged. That is an incredible achievement! The fundraising is broken down into entity and we are thrilled to announce the results: $34,375 was raised for MATES in Construction QLD & NT $24,139 was raised for MATES in Construction NSW $16,345 was raised for MATES in Construction WA $14,502 was raised for MATES in Construction SA $13,619 was raised for MATES in Construction $12,376 was raised for MATES in Mining $9,375 was raised for MATES in Energy $2,485 was raised for MATES in Manufacturing Thank you to everyone who walked the kilometres, shared their stories about MATES and donated to MATES. MATES FO’s were out and about in regional NSW again last week, this time Heather Drew, Marc Finnigan and Joseph Browne were at the Transgrid/elecnor - EnergyConnect project. They visited 2 sites, Buronga and Baranald to deliver GAT and connector training at both. Such important work giving workers on site the awareness and skills to recognise when one of their workmates is doing it tough. According to the most recent Australian Bureau of Statistics, 3,249 people take their lives every year in Australia. That tragic figure translates to 9 people a day, and construction workers are among those at greatest risk due to working long hours away from family and friends, fatigue and reluctance to discuss issues by many workers. To help ease the burden, Elecnor Australia has partnered with Mates in Construction to ensure our workforce know who they can turn to for support. Mates in Construction is an industry-backed, research-based suicide prevention and support program that’s been operating since 2008. This month, general awareness talks have been held at our camps at Buronga, Lockhart and Balranald about the importance of mental health. The team from Mates in Construction – Joey, Heather and Marc called for volunteers at our sites so they could equip them with the skills needed for a deeper conversation for a mate in crisis. These volunteers are called “connectors”. This type of training saves lives because at the end of the day ... we all want to go home. Earlier this month, we were eager and delighted to have MATES in Construction NSW join us onsite to not only educate but also normalise mental health awareness. I am proud to also mention that following the session, conversations immediately started amongst our subcontractor teams discussing if anyone wasn't feeling okay or whether they needed a guiding hand. Keep an eye out for each other out there; check in with your mates and remember it's okay to not be okay. #construction #mentalhealthawareness #mates #education

A huge turnout at the MATES in Construction General Awareness Training (GAT) at Salesforce Tower in Sydney! An impressive 113 subcontractors and project team members participated in the GAT training, which aims to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing in the construction industry. Incredibly, 16 attendees volunteered to become a MATES Connector and undertake further training on how to help keep someone safe in a crisis and connect them to professional help. We look forward to our SHAPE Sydney MATES Connector Training session in April. Having commenced construction at Salesforce Tower in October 2022, this is the first MATES GAT session held at the site. A huge congratulations to Jasmin Taylor and the Salesforce Tower project team for organising this event!
