Andrew McMahon, our General Manager of MATES in Mining, Energy, and Manufacturing, departed from his role earlier this year. While we are saddened to see him go, we are immensely grateful for the incredible contributions he has made during his time with MATES. Andrew has been an integral part of our organisation, bringing his strategic leadership and unwavering commitment to mental health and suicide prevention to everything he does. His passion for making a meaningful difference in the communities we serve has been evident through the impactful initiatives he championed. Andrew’s journey with MATES began as the inaugural CEO of MATES in Mining until 2019, and his return as General Manager was a testament to his dedication to the cause. During his tenure, he not only strengthened our foundations but also helped expand our reach and impact in the mining, energy, and manufacturing sectors. As Andrew embarks on the next chapter of his career, we wish him every success in his future endeavours and know that he will continue to make a difference wherever his path leads.

A Change in Leadership for MATES Australia After seven incredible years at the helm, our National CEO, Chris Lockwood, has decided to pursue new opportunities. Chris's leadership has been nothing short of transformational, guiding MATES Australia to remarkable growth and setting the standard for workplace suicide prevention. Here’s what we’ve achieved together under Chris’s leadership: - Expansion & Funding Growth: MATES funding has tripled, and our services now extend beyond construction to mining, energy, and manufacturing. - Volunteer & Team Growth: Staffing tripled, and we launched MATES NZ in 2019, now with a team of 30 delivering life-changing programs across the country. - Program Reach: Over 400,000 workers inducted face-to-face and 40,000 volunteers trained across Australia and New Zealand. - Global Recognition: In 2021, MATES in Construction was recognised by the World Health Organisation as a best-practice model for workplace suicide prevention. Chris’s vision, dedication, and advocacy have solidified MATES as a leader in suicide prevention. His final day with us will be 20 December 2024, and while the recruitment process for our next National CEO is underway, our Acting CEO can be reached at ceo@mates.org.au. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Chris for his extraordinary service and wish him every success in his future endeavours. Together, with our valued partners and supporters, we look forward to building on this legacy and continuing to deliver real impacts for workers in Construction, Energy, Mining, and Manufacturing.

Today is International Volunteer Day! Our MATES Connectors and ASIST-trained legends are the backbone of what we do. These incredible volunteers step up every day to look out for their mates, having tough conversations and making sure no one faces life’s challenges alone. This September we saw how powerful their impact is during Fly the Flag! Across worksites and even borders, their dedication to mental health and suicide prevention is saving lives. To all our volunteers—thank you for being the difference. You’re the true meaning of mates helping mates. 💪 #MATESHelpingMates #Volunteers #Connector #ASISTTrained #MATES

Great to see the legends at Intellergy's Annual Safety Day learning about both physical and psychosocial hazards as well as mental health and suicide prevention. A huge thank to Field Officer Kirsten for running an awesome training session with the Intellergy crew!
Had an amazing turnout at Intellergy’s Annual Safety Day last week on International Men’s Health Day (November 19). Our clients, staff and subcontractors all met in Mudgee NSW to listen and learn from some really impressive presentations. Huge thanks to Pat Kelleher and Cathy Connors from Essential Energy for your presentations on Workplace Safety and Psychosocial Hazards; Kirsten Ferraro from MATES in Energy on Suicide Prevention in the Energy Industry; and to the team at LakeMacZoo for scaring the life out of our guys with your raft of deadly snakes 😂 Already looking forward to next year!

🌏 International Men’s Day 2024 is a chance to shine a light on the challenges many men face — from mental health struggles to homelessness, violence, and suicide. It’s also a time to celebrate the strength of Positive Male Role Models, this year’s theme. 💪 At MATES, we know the importance of having someone in your corner. This International Men’s Day, let’s have honest conversations about men’s mental health, break the stigma, and create workplaces that support our mates. #InternationalMensDay #MATES #PositiveMaleRoleModels #MentalHealthMatters #MATEShelpingMATES #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealth
