Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children now more than ever need our support and care, not cages and adult sentences. But the QLD Crisafulli Government has rammed through regressive laws that will send more children to prison for longer and override human rights. These discriminatory laws will see even more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children locked up in overcrowded, unsafe prisons, and kids as young as ten facing harsher sentences like life detention. Queensland already holds the shameful title of locking up the most children in the country. The Crisafulli Government must stop playing political football with children's lives, and instead listen to communities who know what works. We need to #RaiseTheAge, address systemic racism and discriminatory policing and properly invest in Aboriginal-led preventative and early intervention services. About us
The Human Rights Law Centre protects and promotes human rights in Australia and in Australian activities overseas. We do this using an integrated strategic combination of legal action, advocacy, research and capacity building. The HRLC is an independent, not-for-profit, non-government organisation and is a registered charity so all donations are tax deductible. We work in coalition with key partners, including community organisations, law firms and barristers, academics and experts, and international and domestic human rights organisations. Over the last ten years, we’ve established constitutional protection of the right to vote, improved access to healthcare for prisoners, provided human rights training to over 15,000 people and held Australia to account for its human rights obligations on the international stage.

The Albanese Government's harsh new migration laws threaten refugee and migrant communities across Australia. We stand in solidarity with our friends and partners in refugee and migrant communities across Australia. The laws were rushed through by Labor and the Coalition in Parliament's final hours of the year – with no details about how the new powers will be used, and leave thousands of people with unanswered questions about their futures. We will continue fighting for people to have the chance to live in safety and dignity in Australia. Read our full statement on how we can collectively resist these anti-migrant laws: https://lnkd.in/gxvMYU6Q

More people than ever in Australia are being exposed to the harm caused by new technologies, digital platforms, and artificial intelligence. It's why today we've released a new guide for technology whistleblowers, with Digital Rights Watch, Reset.Tech Australia and Psst.org The guide will empower whistleblowers to raise concerns about harmful digital platforms and speak up about wrongdoing. Whistleblowers need to be protected, not punished, in holding technology companies accountable. Read "Technology-Related Whistleblowing: A Practical Guide" here: https://lnkd.in/gpPHR8Ds

Right now, we face a critical moment in the fight for First Nations rights. Children belong in schools and playgrounds, but across Australia, children as young as 10 are being locked up in prison cells. Due to systemic racism in our laws, policies and policing, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and children with disability are unfairly overrepresented in the criminal legal system. We are working in partnership with First Nations communities and organisations fighting against racist and discriminatory laws, including the latest moves by the Queensland Government to impose adult sentences on children. We won’t stop fighting until every child is able to grow up in their community and with their family, instead of being locked up in prison. You can fuel the fight for justice by making a donation this week. Donations to our Human Rights Week Appeal are currently being doubled. Your support will help push for a more just future: https://lnkd.in/gehaJ87e

Today is #HumanRightsDay, marking when the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year’s theme: “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now” demonstrates why we need to work together in solidarity to defend our hard-fought human rights, and leave no one behind. Human rights are a guiding compass so that every person can live a life with dignity and freedom. They belong to all of us. But human rights are under attack and we must push back. Support human rights by donating to our Human Rights Week Appeal: https://lnkd.in/gEqDUBE6
