Chief Executive Officer at Australian Private Hospitals Association

Took dad into Gold Coast Private Hospital’s Emergency Department today. Sitting with him while they worked out his problems, I marvelled at the care and attention every patient and their family received. I want to thank the doctors, nurses, orderlies and all staff for their professionalism, care and understanding. He’ll be in overnight for tests but he’s ok for an old fella. Health insurance is just a means to an end. It’s this level of quality care that is the insurers’ entire value proposition. Shortchanging private hospitals while siphoning record profits from people’s hard-earned premium payments, is indefensible.

Private hospitals are calling on the federal government to ensure health insurance companies meet the actual costs of patient treatment. Over the last 3 years the shortfall has been over $3B. Failing that, the government will need to provide a temporary co-payment of $100-$200 per hospital admission to keep more hospitals from closing. This co-payment would be in the range of $450m to $650m a year for 2 years. Without these measures, private hospitals who account for 70% of surgery in Australia and 42% of all hospital admissions, will be forced to charge patient gaps. Otherwise, more hospitals will close putting even more pressure on the struggling public hospital system already groaning under the weight of long waiting lists. • 🌍 Today is International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), a perfect time to highlight the importance of connection and inclusion. 🏡 At Riverside Community House in Geelong, Cheddar and Nacho, two Golden Retrievers, are doing just that. Their visits every couple of weeks, along with their owner, disability support worker Kayla, bring companionship to the four Riverside residents. These visits are a simple yet meaningful way to connect and make everyone feel included. #IDPwD #InclusionMatters #DisabilityAwareness #SupportWorkers #HealthscopeIndependenceServices ➡️ Read more: https://ow.ly/Oxbn50UjwYK

General Manager at The Melbourne Clinic

On Thursday last week, The Melbourne Clinic was honoured to host an event for the high level delegates of the Indonesian Ministry of Health. We spent the morning sharing ideas and experiences of best practice in delivering comprehensive and integrated mental health programs. I was proud to showcase the mental health programs that TMC offer. A very successful day, indeed!

Clinicians of the future. These wonderful work experience girls were attentive, intelligent and passionate. Our second round of year 10 work experience this year. It's a small and fledgling program but the NBH Work Experience Program is one of the small ways we can grow our own talent on the Beaches. With a worldwide shortage of healthcare workers, we definitely need young women like this as our future professionals. Special thanks to all of the staff that took time to support the students particularly Caroline Davis and the Interventional Suite team, Helen Kelly and Education Services, Women & Children Services Kristen Boyd, Liz Jacob, Anita Barrett and the Paediatricians including Claire Egbers, our fabulous wards 4B, 5B and 5C includingSarah Coleman, the ED team including Jo Watts and Simone Hyland. Last but not least our great Guest Services Team lead by Carolina Dunkerley. Kathryn Berry, A/Professor Peter Thomas, Sara Coates (Woodcock), Ben Jones, Emma-Jane Clark, Pauline Sorbello, Alex Atkinson

  • Today we've announced that we will be terminating our contracts with BUPA and the Australian Health Service Alliance. This means unless we can agree a new contract, from 20 February 2025, Bupa patients will face an Out-of-Pocket fee, and from 4 March AHSA members will as well. We are extremely disappointed to have to take this step. Here’s why: We've been working to introduce a new Hospital Facility Fee for Bupa and Australian Health Service Alliance (AHSA) fund members. We were doing this reluctantly because BUPA and Australian Health Service Alliance are refusing to fairly fund our hospitals going forward. We care for over 650,000 patients every year and are committed to providing them with the best possible care. But we can only continue to do this if we are adequately funded. Our patients pay their private health insurance premiums year after year, and they rightly expect that the insurance companies will fairly fund their care. Today's announcement is the result of both insurers pursuing legal threats to stop the introduction of this fee. Their refusal to sustainably fund hospitals in this high-cost environment meant we were left with no option but to issue the termination notices. As always, we stand ready to negotiate fair funding agreements with Bupa and the AHSA that properly addresses the funding challenges facing us and other private hospitals. This is vital to ensure we can continue to invest in our facilities and keep delivering outstanding patient care. We will not allow insurers to compromise the patient care our doctors and dedicated hospital teams provide. #Bupa #AHSA #HealthFunding #FairFunding #Better care https://ow.ly/tNzS50UclqO

  • We were super excited to see our patient experience learnings shared internationally. Our National Patient Experience Manager Anita Hodge recently took time out from her family holiday in the UK to speak at the Northern Ireland NHS Conference NICON24, Anita spoke about how Healthscope values and engages with our Consumers at every level of our business, through our Consumer Engagement Program. In another session she highlighted how Healthscope is committed to continuously improving the patient experience through telling the patient stories behind the NPS and identifying the key emotional touch points at every stage of the patient journey. However, better never stops. We're continuing to work with our partner Adoreboard to develop the next stage of Healthscope's patient experience journey. When reflecting on her NI visit Anita said “It was a privilege to be invited to speak on our Healthscope experiences by such an inspiring group of driven and committed Healthcare leaders in the NHS. It was also a fantastic opportunity to meet the Adoreboard team in their Belfast Office and plan the next phase of excellence in patient experience at Healthscope. There are exciting times ahead for our hospitals in 2025”. #PatientExperience #BetterCare #NICON #ConsumerEngagement #Technology
