We support WA ACCOs in the delivery of the best services and outcomes for Aboriginal people and their communities.

About us

In alignment with Priority Reform Two of the National Agreement, the WA Government committed to sector strengthening activities through commissioning AHCWA to establish a new peak body to represent the Aboriginal community-controlled sector in WA. Through extensive consultation with the WA ACCO sector, a name was settled on for the peak body: the Council of Aboriginal Services Western Australia (CASWA). The Council of Aboriginal Services WA (CASWA) was registered as a Public Company Limited by Guarantee on 16 March 2023. The aim of CASWA is to strengthen and increase the capacity of WA ACCOs involved in service delivery to Aboriginal people in WA across priority sectors identified under the National Agreement. Vision Aboriginal community-controlled organisations (ACCOs) in Western Australia are united by a strong and collective voice, that enables them to deliver place-based, community-led and culturally appropriate services to achieve better outcomes for Aboriginal people and their communities. Mission CASWA leads and supports Aboriginal community-controlled organisations to deliver services that have a positive impact on outcomes and build the strength and empowerment of Aboriginal people and their communities across Western Australia. CASWA will do this through: - Policy development and advice to government and other stakeholders informed by sector consultation and research; - Representation of ACCOs and advocacy to government and other mainstream stakeholders; - Information dissemination; and - Capacity-building and sector development.

Did you know that according to YouGov Community Attitudes to Financial Abuse Survey, people who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander are almost three times as likely to have experienced financial abuse from a partner compared to those who don’t? Over the next 18 months, as part of our Next Chapter Innovation program, we are partnering with two organisations to accelerate innovative response to help address financial abuse in First Nations communities. Through financial funding, mentoring and a range of other non-financial initiatives, we will support projects to drive social change in First Nations communities. The latest cohort of Next Chapter Innovation Partners include:   Strong Women Talking – a First Nations led, local organisation who are helping to break the cycle of domestic and family violence in First Nations communities. Strong Women Talking will deliver mobile domestic violence education and awareness sessions, which are trauma-informed and culturally safe, tailored and client centred.    Council of Aboriginal Services Western Australia (CASWA) - an Aboriginal Community Controlled organisation and peak body established to increase the capacity of WA Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations involved in service delivery to Aboriginal people in WA. CASWA will develop its ‘Empowered Pathways’ project that will provide First Nations people impacted by financial abuse with the tools to achieve economic independence, personal empowerment and cultural resilience through financial literacy programs, employment pathways and culturally aligned economic activities. • The Council of Aboriginal Services Western Australia (CASWA) and AHCWA (Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia) have jointly voiced serious concerns about the WA Government's new Jurisdictional Action Plan under the five-year National Skills Agreement, which neglects the workforce needs of Aboriginal people and completely disregards Aboriginal Community-Controlled Registered Training Organisations. • An important report released by SNAICC, reinforcing the need for ACCOs to be providing critical services for Aboriginal children and families.

The 2024 Family Matters Report tells us that Aboriginal community controlled organisations are best placed to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who are in the child protection system. If we are to see a change in these statistics, governments need to put more investment into the ACCO sector so that we can begin to see better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care.

  • The Goldfields Aboriginal Language Centre (GALCAC) has been actively raising awareness of the need for WA State Aboriginal Languages Legislation with WA State Parliament. This effort is part of the WA Aboriginal Languages Legislation Alliance (WAALLA) campaign. Currently there is no State policy or legislation to protect the First Nations languages of WA. 📝 Please consider supporting GALAC’s important work in this space by signing the e-petition below. 💬 'Language is identity, the mouth of culture, and the carrier of culture. To lose a language is like burning down a library; all that information and knowledge is gone forever. The First Nations languages of WA carry tens of thousands of years of knowledge and information about WA. They are State treasures' - WA Aboriginal Languages Legislation Alliance, wangka.com.au/waalla. Tags: WA Aboriginal Language Legislation Alliance, Susan Hanson.

A petition to WA State Parliament for Aboriginal Language Legislation is now live and ready for signing! An e-petition for Aboriginal Language Legislation has been accepted by Parliament and is available for reading and supporting, on the parliament e-petition website. Click on the link below. Please share, share, share and reach everyone who wants there to be State legislation to protect and enshrine WA's First Nations languages! The more people who sign the petition, the great impact it will have on Parliament. Here is the link to the online petition: https://lnkd.in/gKpkGSaw Many thanks to the Hon. Kyle Mcginn MLC for supporting this petition. Further info (08)9021 3788 or info@wangka.com.au
