Bus Stop Films is a not-for-profit organisation that uses filmmaking to make the world more inclusive!
About us
Bus Stops Films is an award winning, disability led NFP organisation which has been in operation since 2009. With a primary focus supporting those living disabilities and others from marginalised communities, we use film studies education, filmmaking and the film industry to change community attitudes globally around the rights and contribution to society of and by people with disability and other marginalised groups. Bus Stop Films produces amazing films. We show that being inclusive doesn’t impact budgets, shoot times or the quality of a film, however enhances the experiences of cast, crew and audiences and changes community attitudes for the better. With now almost 65 short films made, winning more than 100 awards and screening in festivals and on streaming services around the world, to an audience to date of over 45M people, we are a viable and dynamic creative organisation. How do we do we achieve this? We EDUCATE We deliver our Accessible Film Studies Program for adults living with disability in partnership with Australia's leading film schools. The 40-week film studies course teaches students key aspects of filmmaking – story development, script writing, lighting, sound, costume, camera techniques, producing and directing. Students work with their film studies tutor and support workers to develop a film idea which they shoot as part of the course. We CREATE Our students work with award winning industry professionals to create amazing short films. We ADVOCATE We drive disability confidence in the screen industry and support people with disability into employment. Winner Breakthrough Business of the Year - Screen Producers Australia Awards. Participant Spotlight - Ellen Maher ⚡ Ellen is a spark of energy, awesome dancer and gymnast and has the warmest smile. Let's see how she joined Bus Stop Films. I joined BSF to learn more things, because I had left school and wanted to keep learning. My friend Ashley was already doing Bus Stop Films, and she made me excited about doing it when I turned 18. In the seven years I have been a BSF student, I have learnt how to use different equipment, how films are made from start to finish, the importance of being on time, being prepared to do a whole day of filming, being part of a crew, more about how to work with people, more confident to stand up for myself if someone makes me feel uncomfortable, how much fun it is to work in a group, a sense of belonging, the importance of writing down notes on the film set, a sense of satisfaction to see my class film from start to finish. The most important thing I have learned is that everyone has a different story, and that there are different ways of telling it e.g. through dance I have improved in my story telling. When I first started 7 years ago, I wasn't that confident to make suggestions when my class was developing a script. Now I am. My favourite project that I have worked on is 'Look the Part'. I loved being in front of the camera, and acting with Peaches, my fairy godmother. It was so much fun! I would love to be able to be involved in film making forever, and BSF has shown me that I can be involved. I love being a part of a group of people who are all different. We all have different stories to tell, and I love that our films tell some of those stories. I love seeing people with different abilities on tv and in movies. Participant Spotlight Nathan Basha ⚡ Nathan has been part of Bus Stop Films for 10 years! Let's hear what Nathan has to say about Bus Stop Films From a very young age, I have always been passionate about movies and wanted to make films. So, when an opportunity came up to learn more about how films are made, I was all in. When I first started, it was just a small class of us. As you'll hear tonight from the representation, we have from NSW its grown and Bus Stop Films is now all over Australia! Bus Stop Films has enhanced my filmmaking skills, expertise and knowledge and supported me in getting employment opportunities in the film industry. This has included work experience on Hollywood blockbusters, directing short films and being a co-producer on future film projects. There is a lot of behind the scenes work to make a short film. From all the creative ideas being shared by students, to working out what type of film genre we want to make and then working out the different steps that it takes to make a film. This includes, directing producing, set design, casting, actors, cameramen, a budget, location, make-up and hair, costumes, editing and cutting the film. You name it and we have had students in these different roles and being part of the film making process. My personal favourite part is being able to Direct. I love Directing and it’s a great way to be able to work closely with everyone and be the lead in how the film is made and what gets to be included and what needs to be taken out! I am passionate about inclusion and diversity and filmmaking is such a great way to ensure all voices are seen as equal and the stories of the untold are told and brought to life.
