About us

Representing the interests of approximately 135,000 members across the country, the Australian Municipal, Administrative, Clerical and Services Union, trading as the Australian Services Union or, just simply, the ASU, is one of the largest trade unions in Australia. Formed in 1993 as an amalgamation of a number of unions, including the FCU, the MEU and the MOA, the ASU operates in areas as diverse as local government, energy, water, public transport, airlines, shipping, travel, ports, social and community services, the public sector, information technology and private sector office professions. _______________________________ The Australian Services Union acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land where we work and live. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders of all communities who also work and live on this land. As organisers and activists in the workplace and work toward a just society, we acknowledge and draw on the rich history of activism of first nations people. Always was always will be Aboriginal land. Authorised by Emeline Gaske, National Secretary, Australian Services Union, 116 Queensberry St, Carlton South, Victoria, 3053, Australia

  • During the 16 Days of Activism Against Gendered Violence, we’re highlighting how workplace rights can support victim-survivors. Flexible workplaces can help victim-survivors of family and domestic violence. An ASU member was supported by their union and their employer to allow work-from-home options and part-days of paid FDV leave. They ensured privacy and enabled access to critical support programs like a home safety audit and children’s counselling. Small changes in workplace practices can make a life-changing impact. #16DaysOfActivism

  • During the 16 Days of Activism Against Gendered Violence, we’re highlighting how workplace rights can support victim-survivors. One front-line worker and ASU member shared how a supportive workplace helped a woman use FDV leave flexibly—one day a week—to attend critical meetings and secure stable housing. But safety and support shouldn’t rely on having a fair boss. That’s why strong, enforceable workplace rights—like paid FDV leave—are vital for everyone. Workplace support can make all the difference for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence. #16DaysOfActivism

  • The announcement of $500 million for clean energy upgrades in social housing is a big win for working Australians. This investment will transform 50,000 homes, slashing power bills by $1,800 a year and making homes healthier with solar, efficient appliances, and better insulation. This is a clear step towards addressing inequality and creating a fairer, climate-safe future. Affordable, clean energy is essential to building resilient communities and ensuring no one is left behind in the move to net zero. This is the kind of targeted action we’ve been calling for—a win for workers, families, and the planet. 🌍 Let's keep pushing for solutions that centre workers in the fight against climate change.

  • Great news for early childhood educators in Local Government—a 15% pay rise is on the way! This increase is a well-deserved recognition of the vital role educators play in shaping children’s futures and reflects the dedication and professionalism they bring to their work every day. It’s not just about wages—this pay rise also helps secure jobs by attracting and retaining skilled educators, while providing relief for families through fee limits. This is a real win for everyone, and it shows the power of standing together. If you know a colleague who hasn’t joined yet, now’s the time to encourage them to join the ASU and be part of making even bigger changes. 👉 Join the ASU today: asujoin.asn.au #EarlyChildhoodEducation #EarlyChildhoodWorkers #LocalGovernmentWorkers #LocalGovernmentMatters

  • Each year, community legal centres support hundreds of thousands of people, guiding them through complex legal and life challenges. Yet in 2023-24, due to stretched resources, the number of people they had to turn away could fill the southern hemisphere's largest stadium nearly four times over. Discover the insights from the report, More than legal services: Preventing crises, strengthening communities, here: https://clcs.org.au/sots/ 📊

  • During the 16 Days of Activism Against Gendered Violence, we’re highlighting how workplace rights can support victim-survivors. An ASU member working in a domestic violence service recently helped a client—a clerical worker in a small business—escape a violent situation. Her employer, understanding the importance of safety and stability, supported her to access paid family and domestic violence leave. With one week of leave, this courageous woman got her 3 children to safety in Temporary Accommodation and secured a subsidised rental home with help from the service. Thanks to the preparation she had done and the resources available, she could rebuild her life without sacrificing her job or stability. This is why workplace protections like family and domestic violence leave matter—they save lives and empower victim-survivors to take the steps they need to break free. #16DaysOfActivism
