We are delighted to welcome Anna Nestor to the NUA leadership team as VP of Quality. Anna brings over two decades of experience to the role, having held senior leadership positions with major life science companies including Teleflex, Organon, Viatris, Covidien and Merck Sharpe & Dohme. In addition to this, Anna has been instrumental in introducing innovative devices into women’s health, having managed the effective transfer of the Jada System for postpartum haemorrhage from Alydia Health into Organon following the acquisition. Anna is a Galway native and studied at both the Atlantic Technological University and the University of Galway, holds degrees in engineering and commerce and a masters degree in technology management. Although she has worked across many geographies over the past twenty years, finding a suitable role in a Galway-based start-up was an opportunity that Anna wanted to explore. Speaking about the announcement, our CEO Barry Mc Cann stated “I have known Anna for a number of years and I have no doubt that she is a brilliant fit for our company. Anna further strengthens our leadership team and it is a major boost for us to secure her expertise as we develop our quality systems for the SteriCISION device.” Padraig Maher, Marie-Therese Maher, Anne Geary Schmults, Elizabeth Garner, Robert Bilkovski, MD, MBA

Our Board Chair Dr Elizabeth Garner provides an excellent summary of some of the amazing work being done in women's health research, as presented recently at the White House. With more funding, so much more can be achieved!

Last week, the President and the First Lady hosted the “White House Conference on Women’s Health Research,” organized by The White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research and the Milken Institute Health. Today I'm posting about the spectacular scientific presentations by three academic researchers (all women!!), each doing work in one of the three women’s health categories: conditions that affect women only, differently, and disproportionately. Dr. Marlena Fejzo (USC) shared her work in searching for a genetic cause of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) (severe nausea and vomiting of pregnancy). HG is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth and postpartum depression. She herself had HG and was told she was exaggerating her symptoms for attention (sadly, not an uncommon experience); she miscarried at 15 weeks gestation. Dr. Fejzo has identified a hormone (GDF15) that may be the cause of HG and is working with pharma to develop a drug for the condition. Dr. Martha Gulati (Cesar Sinai) presented research on sex differences in cardiovascular disease (the #1 killer of women). She described known differences in heart disease between men and women. For men, the cause is often obstruction in large blood vessels, while for women it's often small vessels. Despite this knowledge, there are no guidelines to help doctors treat women with small vessel disease, because we have largely excluded them from clinical trials. Dr. Gulati also shared fascinating data that suggest that women and men may need different amounts of exercise, saying "we don't have to be little men!" Dr. Lisa Mosconi (Weil Cornell Medicine) shared her work toward understanding the links between menopause and Alzheimer's Disease, which disproportionately affects women. In menopause, as estrogen declines, women enter what she called a "window of vulnerability" that may increase risk for Alzheimer's. Research shows that longer reproductive years may be protective, and that early menopause has been linked with increased risk. She also noted that although millions of women use some form of hormone therapy, the effects of these therapies on the brain have never been measured! We must continue to push for even more funding for women's health. With increasing funding, the pipeline of brilliant researchers like Dr's Fejzo, Gulati, and Mosconi will grow, and more fundamental science will emerge. A robust foundation of science will lead to the development of new diagnostics and therapies for conditions that are unique to women, and differentiated treatments for conditions that disproportionately or differently affect women. An excellent example of how fundamental science can lead to breakthroughs in health is the remarkable advancement in oncology over the last few decades--I believe we can replicate this in women's health. Last week, the President and the First Lady hosted the “White House Conference on Women’s Health Research,” organized by The White House (WH) Initiative on Women’s Health Research and the Milken Institute Health. What a brilliant way to end 2024 and to look forward toward the continued elevation of women’s health! I listened to the recording over the weekend because I realized that there were so many words of wisdom and deep insights shared by the speakers, and I wanted to capture them all! Over the next few days, I'll be posting some of the key takeaways I gathered from the meeting. The morning began with comments from Jennifer Klein (WH Gender Policy Council), Carolyn M. Mazure (WH Initiative on Women’s Health Research), Maria Shriver (Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement), and Esther Krofah (Milken Institute Health). 🔸 Jennifer Klein noted the nearly $1 billion already committed for women's health research. Agencies have strengthened their research and data standards to ensure that women are considered at every point in the research process. 🔸 Dr. Mazure emphasized that women's health is now a recognized field of scientific study, and that the stage has been set to grow its scope and depth. 🔸 Esther Krofah highlighted Milken's work designing funding and partnership solutions to bridge gaps and spur innovation. I found Maria Shriver's remarks particularly powerful and moving: some quotes: 💠 "...this issue is one of health equity and justice for women.” 💠 “Without our health, we cannot work, we cannot parent, and we cannot be caregivers.” 💠 “Everybody in this room is one diagnosis away from a life changing moment that could jeopardize the very communities and the families who depend on each and every one of us.” 💠 "My mother said-'Do not be afraid to go to whoever holds the power, if you really want to get something big done' and that's why I went to Jill Biden!" 💠 “There is no doubt in my mind that we will make good on this pledge to continue to transform women’s health; no doubt in my mind that we will be table to show women across this nation that they are valued, they are worthy, their lives matter, and their stories are real." 💠 “We women do brave hard things because we recognize that brave hard things are what create a more just, a more tender and more loving world” 💠 “Today I hope we can all tap into what lies within us and light it on fire!” Janine Austin Clayton Vivian OTA WANG Lucy Perez Marsha Henderson Carolee Lee Hadine Joffe, MD Liz Powell Sharon Kedar, CFA Jessica J. In the words of our friends at Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Inc. (BMMA) “Every woman has the right to safe and respectful maternal health care. Human rights standards surrounding safe pregnancy, childbirth, and respectful maternal care are rooted in the human rights to life, health, equality, and non-discrimination.” Today, on #HumanRightsDay, we are reflecting on the progress we’ve made–and the work that remains. Globally, maternal health has improved over the past decade, but many women are still being left behind. We are not on track to meet the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goal to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 deaths per 100,000 live births. This isn’t just a challenge—it’s a call to action. Maternal health is a human right. We cannot stop until it that is fully realized for all women around the world.
