We don't want to catastrophise what is for many the most successful economy in the EU, but we must mitigate against potential dangers, and there are many. More important than that, there is no sign of a vision for indigenous enterprise, beyond attracting in ever more foreign multinationals. In 1922, the new government took a “big bet” and invested 20% of the state’s entire income on the Shannon Hydroelectric Scheme in Shannon. In 1958, realising that protectionism was ruining society, our workers and our society, we took a bold policy decision to become an open economy. Today, we seem to have lost the ability to think big, despite the fact we are a hugely attractive country for migrant workers from other countries. We need to get the “vision thing” back, and doing that requires confronting the vested interests holding back society. We need a government that recognises the need to scale indigenous business, not simply pay others to build their factories here. We need a government which will get out of the way, and allow local businesses to scale and grow. We need a government willing to confront the rentier class in the legal system: it is a roadblock to infrastructure development, affordable housing, affordable family law, free speech, timely commercial dispute resolution, and is discouraging inward investment by FDI. It is taking Ireland decades to develop housing, transport and water infrastructure that takes peer countries a few years. The spend-baby-spend ethos that has bedevilled the last few years must end. The next few years could prove very bumpy if we don’t take action immediately. https://lnkd.in/epvFs2wg
