Today, we celebrate the successful conclusion of the first phase of the Senegal Energy Modelling Capacity Building Programme—a joint effort by the Senegal Ministry of Energy, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, and IRENA. With over 20 national experts completing over 300 hours of training, this milestone lays a strong foundation for Senegal’s investment plan to unlock its vast renewable energy potential, leveraging solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass resources. Analysis from the programme shows Senegal has the possibility to raise its NDC ambition, as well as meet the 40% renewable energy target set under it's Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) by 2030. By 2040, renewable capacity could triple to at least 3,000 MW, driving sustainable development and enhancing energy security. Looking ahead, the programme will expand beyond electricity generation to include comprehensive energy transition planning across transport, industry, and other sectors. This integrated approach aligns energy policies with Senegal’s socio-economic goals, ensuring a fair and inclusive transition. IRENA remains committed to supporting this journey—providing tailored policy advice, addressing barriers, and facilitating investments through platforms such as the Energy Transition Accelerator Financing Platform and the Climate Investment Platform. My sincere gratitude to Senegal’s Minister of Energy, His Excellency Mr. Birame Souleye DIOP, for his leadership and for inviting IRENA to celebrate this important milestone together.
