🩸⏱️ When blood needs to be transported, time matters. It must be transported swiftly on demand while staying carefully preserved, as it expires quickly. Japan, a country facing increasing labor shortages and frequent natural disasters, is actively exploring innovative blood delivery methods.   That’s why we, together with ITOCHU Corporation, All Nippon Airways, the Japanese Red Cross Society, and Tokyo Metropolitan Bokutoh Hospital, successfully tested the delivery of research blood by drone between Urasoe and Nago on Okinawa Island. 🇯🇵   The Wingcopter completed the 53 km route in just 32 minutes, using a specialized container that maintained a steady temperature of 2-6°C throughout the flight.   It is not only a faster alternative to ground transport – the Wingcopter also enables precise, on-demand delivery of the exact amount of blood required, exactly when it’s needed.   Thank you to everyone involved in this joint effort for the collaboration and commitment. Transport is essential for promoting connectivity, trade, economic growth and employment. A lack of access to adequate and affordable transport also means a lack of access to timely healthcare.   Yet over a billion people still live more than 2 km from an all-season road, especially in developing countries. Africa alone would have to spend $98 billion each year on building and maintaining infrastructure in order to close this gap, according to The World Bank Group estimates.   At the same time, the transport sector is responsible for about 20-25% of global CO2 emissions, with road transport alone accounting for 75% of these emissions. When all traffic is stopped for a life-saving delivery   🚑🚨 In emergencies, every second counts. Around the world, essential goods - from industrial supplies and emergency relief to urgently needed medical items - often face delays due to traffic, infrastructure gaps, and topographical barriers. This can lead to tragic losses or to dramatic downtimes and outages.   🇧🇷 A remarkable recent example from Brazil underscores this challenge. In Rio de Janeiro, police halted the Linha Vermelha expressway to ensure a liver donation could reach a hospital in time. Without a helipad, ground transport was the only option, and the delay due to Rio’s traffic could have meant the difference between life and death.   📊 This scenario highlights a stark reality: even the world’s most advanced systems, such as the U.S. organ transport network, still struggle, with 5-10% of organ transplants compromised by logistical issues.   ✈️ While the organ transport is just one example out of many, the point is clear: Delivery drones can play a crucial role in simplifying logistics and in overcoming logistical challenges to deliver mission-critical supplies. “Together, we thrive” truly resonated as this year’s motto at the UPS Healthcare Forum in Budapest, Hungary. The Forum is an inspiring event that brings together visionaries and trailblazers from healthcare, life sciences, and supply chain logistics.   Our Chief Revenue Officer Armando Koerig Gessinger and Head of Experience Joerg Scheuerpflug experienced insightful discussions about new ways of delivering innovative, quality solutions for patients, for example precision logistics for advanced therapies (Doaa Fathallah & Dan Bell from Marken) or the power of Public-Private Partnerships to achieve equitable health (Caroline Wanjiru Kiunga, Ben Safari, Bertrand Pedersen, Amira Ghouaibi). It was also fascinating to learn about all the forces that have an impact on individual health and healthcare systems by Daniel Gagnon and to dive deeper into the challenges of delivering healthcare supplies just in time on a massive scale by Felipe Morgulis.   Thank you, UPS Healthcare, for the invitation and the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations on how to improve access to health through our delivery drones.
