Our cooperation with the district craftsmen's association Meißen has been honoured with the gold medal for outstanding achievements in monument preservation in Europe. As part of the ReConRob research project and under the initiative ‘Wir - Wandel durch Innovation in der Region - Das Handwerk als Innovationsmotor’ ('We - change through innovation in the region - the skilled crafts sector as a driver of innovation'), we presented our robotics demo together with project partners from the district craftsmen's association Meißen at the 'denkmal' fair 2024 in Leipzig. The demo showed the robot-assisted scanning of an object and the abrasive 5-axis processing of the surface. It thus shows the first steps of a practical application of robotic technologies for craftspeople: robots that process components contaminated with harmful substances by sanding, vacuuming, lasering or CO₂ snow jet cleaning. This enables them to carry out work in #monument maintenance without people having to be directly exposed to the resulting hazards. We received the award in particular for the inclusion of impulses from monument preservation for the #development of groundbreaking innovations for general craft practice in the Innovation Academy of the Skilled Crafts Riesa. Do disposal instructions increase the collection quantity and quality of packaging waste for #recycling? Laurin K. investigated this question in his research #internship. Some recyclable waste still ends up in the residual waste bin. Attaching disposal notices is intended to counteract this problem. There is currently a lack of extensive knowledge in #research about the potential and optimal design of the labels. In his research internship, Laurin Knapp developed four disposal instructions and then analysed their effectiveness. Making complex science understandable: The world - and with it scientific knowledge - is becoming increasingly complex, but how can difficult topics be made accessible to a wide audience? Sebastian Stege addresses this question in his diploma thesis. He examines it using the case of hyperuniformity - a mathematical concept that is also described as hidden order in disorder. In his work, Sebastian developed interactive exhibits that allow visitors to playfully discover this abstract concept in public spaces. He followed the entire design process from problem definition, solution approaches and prototype construction to the evaluation of the exhibition objects. Three approaches were examined with separate exhibits: 1️⃣ Understand - knowledge is vividly conveyed with the help of gesture control. 2️⃣ Discover - various application examples from biology, optics and astronomy invite visitors to marvel. 3️⃣ Think ahead - visitors can think about possible applications themselves or ask questions, which in turn feed into the research. The exhibits were on display at the COSMO Science Forum for evaluation from April to July. They can currently be found in the exhibition “//DataSpaces. Our Understanding of “Design Science as an Empirical Discipline” - A Contribution to the Recently Published Volume “Design Research and Design Science” In the recently published anthology “Design Research and Design Science”, edited by Lars Christian Grabbe and Tobias Held, we have summarized our chair's understanding of scientific design research. Christian Wölfel, Nikolas Neumann and Jens Krzywinski describe design science as an empirical discipline that can be assigned to the social and technical sciences. At the same time, empirical design science has its very own questions and brings with it design-specific skills such as professional drafting or proficient model making. Reading is worthwhile! Innovating Hand Rehabilitation 🌟 Losing hand function can severely impact daily life, and unfortunately, 83% of patients in Germany do not regain their baseline function despite therapy. But how can we develop more effective, objective ways to track progress and improve rehabilitation outcomes? In his research internship, Friedrich Hippe worked on refining the prototype of the HFD 200, a hand strength measurement device designed to monitor the course of therapy for neurodegenerative diseases. The focus? Creating a tool that patients can use independently at home for both measurement and training, bridging the gap between clinical settings and daily life. The idea for the research internship came from the development team behind the HFD 200: Cornelius and Constanze Weber. Friedrich’s evaluation of the device involved 3D models and special questionnaires, tailored to assess the usability of everyday household equipment. This is an exciting step toward accessible, patient-centered rehabilitation and better therapeutic outcomes. We are delighted to share that the diploma thesis “GreenTimer – An App to Save Electricity” by our graduate Ina Qian is currently featured in the „Dare to Design“ exhibition at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt am Main. In German households, despite eco-design regulations, an average of 8% of electricity is still consumed in standby mode. To tackle this, the GreenTimer app was developed to motivate users to save energy, with a special focus on intelligent control of timers and devices. What makes GreenTimer unique? It adapts to different user needs by incorporating various strategies such as eco-feedback, nudging, and gamification. The app tailors its approach depending on the individual: some users engage in challenges with their families to save energy for a virtual tree, while others enjoy collecting badges on their own. The app's adaptive functionality is enhanced by a customizable dashboard that includes basic and optional modules, catering to different target audiences. Furthermore, users can select from three different modes to personalize the interface. The setup is user-friendly: during the registration process, the app queries preferences to ensure the start screen is not overwhelming. This project demonstrates the power of adaptive interaction design in driving sustainable behavior change.
