The transition to a circular bioeconomy and sustainable food systems has high potential to contribute to societal challenges such as climate change, substitution of fuel resources and to contribute to healthy food and diets, which is why innovation in the bioeconomy should be accelerated. Although there are significant political initiatives as well as R&D and industrial activities going on, which are designed to develop the bioeconomy sector, there are still challenges in relation to getting a wider uptake of the innovation generated in the sector. One key barrier is that actors from different sectors, such as agriculture, food and chemistry still have limited exchange with each other, and that "sectoral silos" exist. Moreover, bioeconomy is not an own dedicated policy field – the public funding and regulation is therefore scattered and partly incoherent across ministries or geographical levels. To address these challenges the EU-funded project ShapingBio will provide concrete information and recommendations for better policy alignment and stakeholder actions to realize the cross-sectoral potential of the bioeconomy and to reduce the fragmentation across bio-based sectors and food system and policies across regions, domains and governmental levels. 🤔"𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐂, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐂 𝐝𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐬?" This was the central point driving the lively and interactive discussions at our workshop, "Integrating NGOs' Needs in Bioeconomy Policy and Governance in Europe," held on Wednesday, December 11, at APRE’s EU Liaison Office in Brussels. Bringing together 12 dedicated participants from environmental NGOs and the European Commission, the workshop was an engaging exchange of perspectives from diverse backgrounds. Together, we tackled critical threats, challenges, needs, aims and objectives of environmental NGOs, and ways to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders to ensure NGOs’ voices are heard in EU decision-making processes. The conversation reaffirmed the crucial role NGOs play in shaping a sustainable and inclusive bioeconomy: their insights are not just valuable—they are essential for developing policies capable of navigating the complexities of today’s environmental and societal challenges. A heartfelt thank you to all our participants for their incredible contributions! Key discussions included insights from a ShapingBio case study on governance structures in Denmark 🇩🇰, Ireland 🇮🇪, and Germany 🇩🇪 We also heard from Stefan Kraan (The Seaweed Company) and Ann Ruddy (Alga (Seaweed) Ltd.), who shared their first-hand experiences with the licensing process and their suggestions on how to address them 💡 Maris Stulgis from #DGMARE updated us on the European Commission’s work on the topic and presented ideas such as #GreenLicenses, which could support regenerative aquaculture practices across Europe 🇪🇺 Adrien Vincent from Albatros Advisory SAS introduced the #EU4Algae Aquaculture Licensing Tool, a critical asset to help seaweed farmers and aquaculturists get started with the process 🆘 Our panel discussion also featured representatives from local public administrations in the Netherlands, where work is underway to address these issues. Good practices carried out by actors like Havhøst - Ocean Harvest were also highlighted within the framework of the COOL BLUE FUTURE project.
