At Beam, we often hear the question: what does a company builder actually do? In this world of terms and jargon, it's often difficult to get a grasp on who does what. Startup accelerators, venture builders, seed accelerators, incubators, startup studios…it can be a little much. That’s why we’ve put together a super-simple guide to help explain what we’re doing (and what we’re not doing)! We’ll spoil the surprise with a super oversimplified comparison: ▶ Company builders (aka venture studios/startup studios) build startups from scratch by offering candidates pre-qualified ideas, putting them into teams, and supporting them as they make their way through their first big funding round, all in exchange for equity ▶ Accelerators (aka startup accelerators or seed accelerators) take existing startups, bundle them into a cohort, and offer similar resources for a finite amount of time in exchange for equity 💡 The main idea: company builders create something out of nothing, while accelerators take something that already exists and try to make it better.
