Most school leavers in England don’t appreciate the level of consensus about anthropogenic climate change amongst scientists according to the 2023/ 2024 DfE Climate Literacy Survey of school leavers. Whereas studies reveal that the scientific consensus that humans are altering the climate is over 97%, only 22% of respondents to the survey thought that it was over 80%, potentially impacting their own perception of the imperative for climate action. 80% of respondents to the 2023/ 2024 DfE Climate Literacy Survey of school leavers could not identify the correct definition of ‘net zero’. In designing high quality climate education and climate communications, we need to be aware that commonplace terminology such as ‘net zero’ and the 1.5°C key climate goals are not widely understood. This workshop offers a platform for researchers in the insurance and catastrophe modelling industries to share their ongoing research and associated challenges with other natural catastrophe researchers such as academics and those in climate services. Through presentations that spotlight active projects in the insurance sector, this event will enhance transparency of research methods, as well as encourage the development of networks, funding opportunities, and tools to address topical questions collaboratively within academic and industry groups. Registration for this event is now open, visit: https://lnkd.in/eHdSDbyS #InsuranceResearch #CatastropheModelling #EnvironmentalResearch

Join us for our January edition of our “Diverse Voices” online series which has been inspired by the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. These informal conversations are helping to amplify and celebrate the diversity of scientists working in and around the field of weather and climate in the UK. In this session, we will hear from two climate scientists with lived experience of disability. They will talk about their background and journey to where they are today. Please join us to learn about our speakers’ paths and to ask any questions you may have about their careers and work.
