With the current spike in cases of the seasonal RSV infection, learn more about this quite often overlooked respiratory disease. In the latest #ECDConAir podcast episode, we sit down with #ECDC's expert Eeva Broberg, who talks about who is in the risk group of RSV infection, why this disease should not slip the surveillance, its impact on healthcare, and whether current treatments like monoclonal antibodies and the introduction of vaccines in Europe are a game changer. An agency of the European Union
Om oss
EU Agency The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) was established in 2005. It is an EU agency which aims to strengthen Europe's defences against infectious diseases. It is seated in Stockholm, Sweden. Our Mission: To identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health posed by communicable diseases. Further to this, the ECDC works to provide timely information to the European Commission, the Member States, Community agencies and international organisations active within the field of public health. In order to achieve this mission, ECDC works in partnership with national health protection bodies across Europe to strengthen and develop continent-wide disease surveillance and early warning systems. By working with experts throughout Europe, ECDC pools Europe's health knowledge to develop authoritative scientific opinions about the risks posed by current and emerging infectious diseases. 🚨 Almost all countries reporting data to ECDC are observing sharp increases in indicators of both influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity, with a visible impact in secondary care. 👩⚕️ Co-circulation of influenza viruses and RSV against the current background of continued relatively low-level transmission of SARS-CoV-2 could substantially impact healthcare services. 👉 Read the full epidemiological update and ECDC's recommendations: https://lnkd.in/gNBcsMij

Between 21 September and 11 December 2024, 45 cases of zoonotic #avian #influenza infection with A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b virus were reported from North America, according the Avian influenza overview just published by ECDC together with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) ✍ These infections were mainly linked to exposure to infected animals through occupational activities 👩🌾 Human infections with avian influenza viruses remain rare and sporadic, without evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission so far 💡 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/dpBn2h3m

💡 Interested in forecasts on #respiratory viruses? Check out ECDC’s Respicast hub, providing robust forecasts for the #epidemiological situation of several respiratory disease indicators in Europe. 📊 The RespiCast forecasting season has kicked off with great participation from modelling teams. New forecasts are published every Thursday, where an interactive visualisation allows the user to explore the forecasts for different countries, models and indicators. 🌍 Together with RespiCompass, RespiCast aims to enhance #preparedness and support evidence-based decision-making for managing respiratory diseases in Europe.
