  • The Free Route Airspace (FRA) initiative was identified as one of the projects during the first African Aviation Sustainability Laboratory hosted by #AFRAA in June 2022. FRA allows airlines to plan routes freely between defined entry and exit points, leading to significant cost savings, shorter travel times and reduced CO2 emissions. So far 6 AFRAA member airlines have joined the FRA trials. These include: Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Royal Air Maroc, EGYPTAIR, RwandAir Ltd and Airlink. Several trials have already been conducted thus providing, critical data, showcasing promising results (i.e. reduced flight time, reduced fuel burn and lower Co2 emissions). This initiative is poised to enhance Africa's air navigation efficiency and environmental sustainability, benefiting both airlines and passengers. Implementing the #FRA is a major step towards transforming the African aviation market, paving the way for a more efficient and eco-friendly future.  #BetterSkiesForAfrica

  • The African aviation market holds significant economic potential and numerous growth opportunities. However, to fully realize this potential, several challenges must be addressed, including: ✅ High charges and taxes ✅ Inadequate airport infrastructure ✅ Unfavourable regulatory environment ✅ Undercapitalization of African airlines ✅ Insufficient management expertise #AFRAA working with African Civil Aviation Commission AFCAC and various stakeholders are addressing these challenges through the implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). The #SAATM is not just a path but a transformative opportunity for a more prosperous and secure Africa. #AFCAC reports that 37 African countries, representing 67% of AU member states, have signed the Solemn Commitment to the SAATM. This unified market, designed to foster economic growth and enhance connectivity, promises a future where intra-African connectivity will flourish and more growth opportunities will emerge for African airlines. As a result, aviation’s role as an economic driver will grow significantly, bringing prosperity to the entire continent. Collaborative efforts among governments, airlines, and other stakeholders will pave the way for a thriving and prosperous African aviation market. Africa needs to move from the current situation of low choice high fares to a new age of affordable and accessible air transport. #BetterSkiesForAfrica
