  • 🌱 Capacity Building Workshop on Organic Waste, Composting and Climate 🌍 On 12/14/24, Eco-Justice Ethiopia, in collaboration with the Addis Ababa City Cleansing Management Agency and Yeka Subcity Woreda 09, hosted a workshop at Berlottue Hotel to discuss the opportunities and challenges of composting and its contribution to climate protection. The event included discussions on composting techniques, its environmental and economic benefits, and the impact of organic waste conversion. Participants learned how composting reduces solid waste, promotes urban development, and contributes to climate resilience by reducing methane emissions. Key insights included the reduction of methane emissions, job creation, and turning waste into valuable resources. At the event, Eco-justice Ethiopia expressed sincere appreciation for those working in the waste management sector and pioneering entrepreneurs striving to get their composting businesses off the ground. We need to create wider awareness about the value of proper organic waste management and everyone's role in making a functional system that starts with segregation at source. Are you ready and willing to keep your organic waste separate? #Composting #WasteManagement #ClimateAction #LowMethane #JustTransition #LeaveNoOneBehind #OrganicWasteMainstreming #

Daayyaa Generation Network (DGN) and Eco-Justice Ethiopia Launch Pastoralism and Climate Action Workshop in Yaballo, Borana zone.. Yabello, Borana Zone - December 6-7, 2024 Daayyaa Generation Network (DGN), in collaboration with Eco-Justice Ethiopia, has kicked off the 'Pastoralism and Climate Action Workshop' in Yabello, Borana Zone, with a focus on empowering youth and pastoralists for climate action. The two-day workshop, held at Nigat Hotel from December 6-7, 2024, is themed "Empowering Youth and Pastoralists for Climate Action: Advancing Ecological Justice Together." The workshop brings together a diverse group of participants, including elders, representatives from NGOs, and pastoralist youth, who are all committed to advancing ecological justice and tackling the urgent challenges posed by climate change. During the opening session, DGN Board Chairman Hon. Sara Arero emphasized the crucial role of youth in driving positive change. "Youth are the agents of change, and particularly pastoralist youth, who carry the responsibility of addressing the challenges posed by climate change. It is essential for them to raise awareness within their communities and lead the way in finding solutions," he said. DGN Program Manager Art. Omar Gobe also spoke about the importance of youth empowerment in shaping a sustainable future. "At DGN, we are dedicated to nurturing a visionary generation that will drive change within their communities. It is through collective action and youth leadership that we will overcome climate challenges," he stated. In a heartfelt message, Hon. Huka Grase, an elder of the Borana community, praised the efforts of DGN. "Daayyaa Generation is now shining for their community. All youth should follow this path and contribute something valuable, not just for their communities, but for the country and the world," he said. The workshop aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to address climate change and its impact on pastoralist communities. By fostering collaboration among youth, elders, and NGO representatives, the event strives to create a united front for climate action in the Borana zone and beyond. As the workshop continues, the focus remains on empowering participants to be proactive in climate action and to advocate for ecological justice in their communities. Together, DGN and Eco-Justice Ethiopia are working to build a sustainable future through youth-led climate solutions. #riseupandraisegeneration #ecojusticeethiopia #ClimateJusticeNow #EmpoweringYouth, #AdvancingEcologicalJustice #TacklingClimateChangeTogether! #dgn2024 Omar Gobe Wakitola Chachu Arero Boka Chari Enfluencers Consortium for Climate Change Ethiopia (CCC-E)

  • 🌍 Eco-justice Ethiopia at INC-5: Supporting Global Efforts to Combat Plastic Pollution 🌍 Eco-justice Ethiopia is proud to be in Busan, South Korea, actively following and supporting the negotiations at the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5). This crucial process aims to develop a new International Legally Binding Instrument to address the full lifecycle of plastics and combat plastic pollution. So far, INC-5 has seen significant efforts to push forward with the negotiations. However, there is a palpable sense of urgency among delegates and observers to achieve the ambitious goals set in Nairobi in 2022. The mid-week stocktake highlighted the need for a decisive shift in negotiations to move away from business as usual and ensure a robust and effective treaty. Eco-justice Ethiopia, as a UNEP accredited NGO, has managed to register three participants in this round, enabling advocates from Ethiopia, Senegal, and Tunisia to be part of INC-5. We are also collaborating within the well-oiled, smooth machine CSO coalition at the Africa level and globally. Eco-justice Ethiopia stands with the Africa Group and other supportive nations, advocating for a comprehensive financial mechanism that addresses the needs of all Parties, particularly developing countries. We believe that a strong, legally binding treaty with global rules is essential to tackle plastic pollution and promote a sustainable future. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to support and engage in this critical process. Together, we can make a difference! 💚 #EcojusticeEthiopia #INC5 #PlasticPollution #UNEP #AACJ #NaturalJustice #Sustainability #LessPlasticMoreLife #GAIA #GlobalNegotiations #Busan2024 #

Surprise, surprise, another COP failed to deliver 🙄 As COP 29 comes to a close, it's clear that the conference has once again fallen short of expectations, particularly for the issues that matter most to vulnerable communities. Despite being dubbed the "COP of climate finance," the latest text on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) is profoundly disappointing. The African Group of Negotiators (AGN) had high hopes, but the text fails to meet the expectations of developing nations. It acknowledges the widening financial gaps and barriers faced by these countries but lacks meaningful commitments from developed nations. Africa and its allies within the G77 and China negotiating block demanded USD $1.3 trillion in climate finance that is new, additional, predictable, grant-based, and non-debt-inducing. This amount is crucial to address the existential threats of climate change. However, the proposed figures of USD $220 billion for LDCs and USD $39 billion for SIDS are not only insufficient but also risk fragmenting poor countries based on their vulnerabilities. The text's emphasis on concessional loans and mixed sources shifts the burden onto the very countries least responsible for the climate crisis. This approach is not only unfair but also undermines the principle of climate justice. COP 29 was supposed to be a beacon of hope for vulnerable communities, particularly in Africa. Instead, it has left us with a sense of frustration and disappointment. It's time for real commitments and actions that reflect the urgency of the climate crisis. #COP29 #ClimateFinance #ClimateJustice #AACJ #Sustainability #EcojusticeEthiopia #ClimateAction

Adaptation is underfunded. Across the globe, vulnerable communities that have done the least to cause climate change are being denied the resources they need to adapt to a climate-changed world. From large infrastructure projects like building flood barriers, to small interventions like air conditioning in hospitals, adaptation finance is not flowing at scale to where it should be. Even at COP29, adaptation negotiations are stalling on the finance question and so far, contributions to the Adaptation Fund here in Baku have been far below what is needed - and lower than both COP28 and COP27. We must keep adaptation finance at the heart of climate negotiations and act on the solutions in front of us, like: ➡️ Scaling adaptation finance provision ➡️ Simplifying processes to get a hold of adaptation finance ➡️ Reducing debt burdens and freeing fiscal space in developing countries ➡️ Encouraging approaches in recipient countries that integrate adaptation into wider development priorities, including by getting adaptation finance more effectively to local levels. Funding adaptation is a choice. And we are choosing not to. Watch ⬇️ ZeniZeni Sustainable Finance | Imal Initiative for Climate and Development | Transforma | Eco-Justice Ethiopia | Paripurnam India

  • 🌍 COP 29 Update: A Call for Climate Finance Justice 🌍 As COP 29 draws to a close, we are deeply disappointed by the latest text on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG). Despite acknowledging the widening financial gaps faced by developing nations, the text lacks meaningful commitments from developed countries. The African Group of Negotiators (AGN) had high hopes for COP 29, dubbing it the "COP of climate finance." This was seen as a beacon of hope for vulnerable communities, particularly in Africa. However, the current proposal falls short of the USD $1.3 trillion in climate finance that Africa and its allies within the G77 and China negotiating block have demanded. This amount is crucial to address the existential threats of climate change. The proposed figures of USD $220 billion for LDCs and USD $39 billion for SIDS are not only insufficient but also risk fragmenting poor countries based on their vulnerabilities. The text's emphasis on concessional loans and mixed sources shifts the burden onto the very countries least responsible for the climate crisis. We demand: # Immediate revision of the text to address the issues presented by the AGN. # A goal reflecting the AGN's proposal of at least $1.3 trillion from 2025-2035 for adaptation, mitigation, and loss and damage needs. # Mobilization of funds by developed countries from public sources, excluding loans and private sector investments. Let's stand together for climate finance justice and ensure that COP 29 delivers on its promises. #COP29 #ClimateFinance #ClimateJustice #EcojusticeEthiopia #NaturalJustice #ClimateAction #AACJ #PACJA #Sustainability
