🇦🇿 COP29 Presidency Launches Groundbreaking Initiative to Reduce Methane Emissions from Organic Waste 🌱 In a significant step towards mitigating climate change, the COP29 Presidency has introduced the Reducing Methane from Organic Waste Declaration. This initiative has garnered the support of over 30 countries and regions, collectively responsible for nearly half of global #methaneemissions from #organicwaste. In collaboration with the UN Environment Programme-convened Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), these signatories have pledged to establish sectoral targets for reducing methane emissions from organic waste within their future Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Additionally, they have committed to implementing concrete policies and roadmaps to achieve these targets. This groundbreaking declaration signals a global commitment to address the substantial contribution of organic waste to #climatechange. #COP29 is officially underway with our first speaker appearance on a crucial topic. 🌱 Our Senior Campaigner Caitlin Smith moderated a dynamic discussion on reducing methane emissions from landfill at the Global Methane Hub Pavilion, joined by leading voices from Instituto Pólis, Climate Policy Initiative, and the World Biogas Association. The event explored how mismanaged organic waste fuels methane emissions and how smart policies can turn the tide. Topics discussed included: •⁠ ⁠Biowaste challenges in the EU and effective case studies to follow in places like Catalonia •⁠ ⁠Policy tools that drive real change, including supporting local-level action through community waste pickers in Brazil  •⁠ ⁠The strong business case for better practices, this is a win-win for companies and communities  •⁠ ⁠Inspiring success stories from the field We'll be centre stage tackling methane emissions at this COP conference. #COP29 delivered some progress, but there’s far more to be done.🌱🌍 At the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, world leaders, innovators, and activists came together to tackle environmental challenges including plastic pollution.   The major outcome from the talks were leaders agreeing to the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), pledging to contribute at least $300 billion annually to the global fight against climate change.   While this outcome is a step in the right direction, many have called the funds inefficient and there is still a long journey ahead to deliver effective climate action and transition away from fossil fuel plastics.   We hope to see more ambition for change at this week’s UN Global Plastics Treaty negotiations in Busan, Korea. Today was Opening Day at #COP29!  This year, Azerbaijan hosts a pivotal UNFCCC Climate Conference nestled between two other critical environmental international events: the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16) and the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC5). The stakes are high, and this sequence of conferences underscores the interconnection of climate, biodiversity, and pollution—pressing global issues that can’t be addressed in isolation. Tackling each is deeply interconnected through their causes and their solutions.  Each conference is a building block toward a holistic approach to a livable, sustainable planet, despite their separation on the calendar. By aligning solutions across these critical issues, however, COP29 could set a new precedent in global cooperation, bridging gaps between climate action, biodiversity, and pollution. At COP29, World Wildlife Fund will be there to move solutions forward for climate and thread the needle through the COPs by: 🌎 Encouraging leaders to commit to a new finance goal that mobilizes public and private funding for developing countries to support renewable energy, resilience, and conservation initiatives.  🌏 Working with partners to push countries to submit new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by 2025 that close the emissions gap and limit warming to 1.5°C. 🌍 Ensure carbon markets uphold high standards, protect marginalized communities, and genuinely contribute to climate goals.  🌎 Advocate for a formal workstream recognizing nature-based solutions, as protecting biodiversity is essential for a resilient climate. At COP 27, Aprajita Ashish, highlighted the dairy industry's role in methane emissions. The industry's emissions are skyrocketing. The Government subsidies for dairy farmers are prioritizing short-term gains for the underprivileged over long-term sustainability, completely neglecting the environment needs. The truth is, the dairy industry is accountable for a significant portion of methane emissions, contributing to climate change.
