🌾 Last week, we had a great opportunity to engage with various stakeholders involved with the Government of Indonesia's "One Data in Rice" program which applies a mixed methods approach combining remote sensing and ground truth data. The meeting provided a valuable platform to exchange knowledge and experiences. While learning about the program's findings, we also presented our work involving Big Data including satellite imagery and climate data, as well as the use of mobile data for data analytics and ground truthing. 🔍 We also shared our innovative "Research Dive" events, hackathon-style events where groups of researchers get together to explore and analyse given data sets related to the development and humanitarian issues in Indonesia. This approach could potentially be replicated for the One Data in Rice program. If you're interested in learning more about our past research dives and what topics we've applied it to, visit: https://lnkd.in/gCpxCcmv. 🌟 Thanks to Eric Deeben Wayne Wobcke Huang Jingfeng and Badan Pusat Statistik colleagues Kadarmanto BPS Wida Widiastuti Ika Kartika Febriana for the fruitful and energizing discussions. We look forward to continue exploring ways to collaborate and support the sustainable development agenda in Indonesia! #BigData #ResearchDive #SustainableDevelopment

We recently had the opportunity to participate in the Integrated Urban-Energy Planning and Modelling event supported by USAID Smart Power Program and ASEAN Centre for Energy. As a panellist in the session discussing techniques and tools for urban-energy planning and modelling, we shared our experiences in AI and Big Data in Urban-Energy Modelling, specifically, we talked about previous projects that utilized ride-hailing data to inform transportation planning and policy, as well as our study called After Dark focusing on safe transit for women travelling at night. Key highlights from what we shared: 🌟 Challenges persist. While our proofs of concepts and projects provided valuable insights into the potential of AI and urban planning, challenges including limited data accessibility, data interoperability, and concerns over data ethics and privacy persist. 🌟 Strong public-private partnerships are needed. We advocate building strong #PPP to facilitate resource-sharing, cost-sharing, and the exchange of expertise to accelerate innovation. 🌟 Strengthening policy frameworks is essential. It's key to have adaptive regulations that support tech innovation while ensuring ethical practices and addressing environmental sustainability. Thanks to the ASEAN and USAID teams for organizing this event, facilitating these timely discussions, and extending an invitation our way. We look forward to further engagement to support sustainable urban development! 🏙️ Faizal Thamrin Rika Safrina Michael Petalio, MSc Afham K. #UrbanPlanning #SustainableDevelopment #AIforGood #BigData

🌟 We had the pleasure of welcoming the UNOPS Regional Director Asia, Sanjay Mathur, the UNOPS Director of the Southeast Asia and Pacific Multi-Country Office (EAPMCO), Samina Kadwani, and UNOPS Representative in Indonesia, Sharon Thangadurai, to our office today. 💭 The discussion today covered the existing collaboration between UNOPS EAPMCO and United Nations Global Pulse Asia Pacific but also explored other areas where we can combine our expertise to create bigger and more sustainable impact across the region. As the development challenges we face become increasingly complex and intersectional, embracing new ways of working and establishing strong partnerships is more important than ever. 🌟 We look forward to our continued collaboration and contributing to creating a stronger UN system that can deliver better moving forward! 🌡️ Home to nearly half the world's population , the Asia Pacific is particularly vulnerable to rising global temperatures and sea levels. While urgently reducing global warming remains paramount, sea levels will continue to rise even if we manage to limit temperature increases to 1.5°C. With each additional degree of warming, approximately 30 cm is added to the global sea level every century. Even the most ambitious climate targets will be insufficient to prevent sea-level rise. 🔍 The University of New South Wales (UNSW) and UN Global Pulse Asia Pacific wrote a piece about the fresh approaches, metrics, and tools that we must embrace to adapt to the inevitable rise in sea levels. From community-driven nature-based solutions, data-driven integration for sustainable ocean development, and innovation for strategic planning and resilience, read our latest post where we explore these approaches in more detail: https://lnkd.in/gDMqKmjH Ahmed Khamis El Saeed Iain Payne UNSW Institute for Global Development (IGD) Rebecca M. Earlier this week, we were honoured to have the opportunity to meet with Mr. Tormarbulang Lumbantobing, Executive Director, of the Indonesian AID/ LDKPI, Kementerian Keuangan RI and his team. We had the chance to share what we have been doing in Indonesia and the wider Asia Pacific region and discussed how we can collaborate to support Indonesia's goal of widely contributing to the international development sector, specifically towards a potential collaboration to support neighbouring countries on addressing the impact of sea level rise on data, AI, and emerging technologies. Special thanks to the Indonesian AID team for inviting us and we look forward to possible opportunities for collaboration so we can contribute to creating a better future for all. #IndonesianAID #UNtukIndonesia United Nations in Indonesia #BuildingResilience Ahmed Khamis El Saeed
