The annual COP meetings are always a mix of inspiring and frustrating. Too often it seems like just a lot of rhetoric and grandstanding, completely disconnected from the reality of climate change and the concrete actions the world can take today. As COP29 Azerbaijan wraps up, we're calling attention to Short Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) which are too often overlooked, although there was some progress made this year. Mitigating SLCPs are our best short-term opportunity to prevent the worst effects of climate change in the coming, most critical, decades. https://lnkd.in/gFRZRKFj #climatechange #climateaction #carbonmarkets #refrigerants #methane #COP29Azerbaijan #COP29Baku #sustainability

🙌 That’s a wrap on our panel at #VERGE24! This week during our panel “Tackling Super Pollutants on the Path to Net Zero,” we heard from four inspiring speakers: - Philip Duffy shared about the impact of climate super pollutants and why we should care, as well as the importance of mitigating both carbon dioxide and super pollutants. - Mark Jacobson talked about the science of black carbon and the impact on human health. Did you know that snow covered with black carbon (soot) particles melts faster than snow not covered with black carbon? - Kiff Gallagher spoke about the importance of measuring all climate drivers, not just carbon dioxide but also super pollutants, over any time frame. This additional data can help businesses make more informed investment decisions and address risk. - Ning Jeng shared about the rise in AC usage, existing policies in place to tackle refrigerants, and how his company Recoolit is helping to recover and destroy refrigerants. Thank you to our panelists, as well as Jennifer N. for moderating! #climateaction #climatesolutions #globalwarming #superpollutants

Awesome work by the Charm team! We solved a similar set of problems at Recoolit (link to our post below) with what looks like a pretty similar approach. Their behind-the-scenes work to improve the verification process are fantastic, but I'm particularly excited about their work on attribution. Moving forward it's no longer enough for carbon buyers to see project-level data: anyone who's paying for carbon credits deserves to see exactly where their purchase price is going. I'm happy to see Charm Industrial join Recoolit in offering hyper-granular attribution, this is change that's sorely needed and long overdue. There are huge opportunities to accelerate climate mitigation by focusing on the science of heat reduction, across short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) and other effects (eg albedo changes). GHR fills a much needed gap in the landscape and I'm excited to see their launch!
👋We are the Global Heat Reduction Initiative! As we approach Climate Week, we're excited to roll out our services for testing and feedback! Our goal: drive strategic climate action to accelerate global heat reduction in the urgent near-term, a crucial effort to complement existing long-term solutions. We use the most comprehensive, peer-reviewed climate accounting model available to measure *all* drivers of global warming and their impacts - not just CO2 and similar greenhouse gases, but also climate super pollutants, like methane, black carbon, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and nitrous oxide (N2O). That’s how we will help businesses and governments make the most informed and impactful climate mitigation investments. At scale, we can reduce global heat in years, not decades. Join us as we build out our heat reduction ecosystem. Together, we can slow global warming, faster. ➡ Learn more at our website: https://lnkd.in/gneMWGnU ➡ Read the press release: https://lnkd.in/gA77d9Ut #globalwarming #heatreduction #climateaction #climatechange #superpollutants

Exciting news! We're thrilled to welcome David Antonioli as an advisor to Recoolit. David, the founding CEO of Verra, brings over two decades of experience in carbon markets to our mission of decarbonizing cooling through high-integrity carbon credits. Transparency must be the foundation of tomorrow's carbon market. That's why Recoolit's high-integrity credits come with a best-in-class digital audit trail. Unfortunately, with most other credits you just get a PDF receipt with a registry serial number. This leaves buyers in the position of needing to conduct their own deep diligence. A recent guide from RMI and Climate Collective helpfully outlines how buyers can build a robust data package to evaluate any potential purchase. But carbon buyers need -- and deserve -- a better experience. With Recoolit, your purchase entitles you to an account on our platform, and the ability to drill down to our project activities. You can see how exactly your purchase prevented emissions, with an unprecedented resolution of a single kg of CO2e (!). And we're adding more data points every day. We believe this granularity and transparency is the future, but until then, if you're considering a purchase from a "legacy" project developer, this guide is a great place to start. Or visit https://lnkd.in/ddBQZDrv to learn more.
Our team at RMI believes that transparent data is crucial to a trusted voluntary carbon market. But how should a buyer source and analyze this data so they can make a purchase aligned with their sustainability goals? Over the past months, we worked with our partners at Climate Collective to break this question down and are excited to share our new Buyer's Guide to Carbon Credit Data Quality! https://lnkd.in/g9nyKSpi We hope that these actionable tools and frameworks can help buyers drill into the data and purchase with confidence. Huge kudos to the team that helped bring this guide to life - no one else I would rather dive deep into the nitty gritty metrics with! Great to see the US government emphasizing action against short lived, superpolluting climate forcers! The listed efforts cover methane, HFCs and nitrous oxide, and span domestic policy as well as international cooperation. For more on why companies and governments must take urgent action on SLCPs, and the steps they can take, to get there, take a look at the open letter we co-authored with Project Drawdown and others. https://lnkd.in/e8bW3U3a
Super climate pollutants getting more light from the feds! Methane, N2O, HFCs are much more powerful climate forcers in the near term. Glad to see action across the board. https://lnkd.in/eWH36cse

Refrigerant regulations in the US are starting to get serious. As the HFC phasedown begins, enforcement is on the rise and new regulations are coming into effect from the EPA (on the federal level) and individual states, notably CA, WA, and NJ. Today, it's Home Depot with a $10 million liability for selling HFC refrigerants in violation of WA state law (knocked down to $1.5M for good behavior). Tomorrow, it's subsection (h) of the AIM Act, extending current leak repair, tracking, and reporting requirements to most of the commercial facilities in the country. https://lnkd.in/g66_v3Ei

More tiny steps towards carbon market integrity: Verra inactivates four out-of-date methodologies. Their post on this suggests that three of these are obsoleted or duplicated by newer methodologies, while the fourth is implied to be out of date with the latest overall VCS standard. Kudos to Verra for continuing to iterate towards a set of methodologies that are both scientifically defensible and approachable for project developers. https://lnkd.in/gJ3cf3PS #carboncredits #voluntarycarbonmarkets
