#NewPaper published in ChemCatChem! This is how we engineered a bacterial peroxygenase (tyrosine hydroxylase) to expand its substrate scope, boosting its potential as a bacterial unspecific peroxygenase (BUPO). Proud to have participated in this study with scientists from GECCO Biotech, University of Groningen, Università di Pavia and Zymvol Biomodeling. Congrats to all the authors: Davide Carraretto, Lur Alonso Cotchico, Caterina Martin, Milos Trajkovic, Hugo van Beek, Andrea Matevi, Marco Fraaije, Maria Fátima Lucas and Nikola Lončar. Last week, as part of the BioInspireSensing outreach initiative, Jillian Gamboa, Ahammed Hussain Madhani Mohammed Sadhakathullah, Hamidreza Enshaei, Joan Torras-Costa from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and I from Zymvol Biomodeling had the privilege of engaging with school students at UPC Barcelona East School of Engineering. The session was a wonderful opportunity to spark curiosity and introduce these bright young minds to the transformative potential of bio-sensing. We kicked things off with an interactive presentation, sharing examples of everyday sensing devices and showcasing how innovations in this field are shaping the future of healthcare. To deepen their understanding, we engaged the students in two hands-on activities. One of the highlights was an experiment where they created a hydrogel to function as a simple pressure sensor. Seeing their excitement as they experimented and grasped the concept was truly inspiring! We also organized a questionnaire-based treasure hunt, where students explored 11 posters highlighting the contributions of early-stage researchers within our research network. Each poster offered a glimpse into their unique work, breaking down complex research into accessible and relatable insights. Their curiosity and enthusiasm reminded us of the importance of outreach activities like this—not only to share knowledge but also to inspire the next generation of researchers and innovators. #Outreach #BioInspireSensing #STEMEducation #FutureResearchers #MarieCurieActions #EuropeanCommision

Monday I had the opportunity to present at #Biocat4Value how the combined use of Artificial Intelligence + Molecular Modeling + Bioinformatics is disrupting the Enzyme Engineering landscape. My take is… There will come a time when using AI only might be sufficient for any successful enzyme engineering campaign. But good quality data will always be needed, particularly for novel chemistry. As for now, my bet is on AI + Molecular Modeling leading the future. If there's something we've seen at work, it's that when you couple AI with physics-based simulations, you can generate high quality data and reduce the number of rounds of enzyme evolution. Spending less time Less resources But providing, nonetheless, reliable results.

Breaking an enzyme engineering dogma! It’s often said that improving an enzyme’s thermostability comes at the cost of activity (and vice versa). But we are challenging this notion. In our daily work, when improving an enzyme for performance, we are normally able to maintain (if not improve) stability. How? Long range mutations! In our latest work with the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry (University of Groningen), we show their importance and how boosting stability doesn’t have to mean sacrificing catalytic performance.
A while back, we were lucky to collaborate together with the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry (University of Groningen) on a study that could prove the importance of #ProteinDynamics in catalysis. The idea was simple: to further improve the catalytic performance of an already engineered enzyme by targeting distal mutations that affect the conformational equilibrium of the protein. Now, we’ve summarized the key findings from the original reserch paper in our latest case study. Check it out:
