🌊 Hear you go! – NATO award for underwater communications research Dr Roberto Petroccia, a scientist at the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), has been awarded a prestigious NATO scientific award for his ground-breaking work on secure underwater communications. The accolade, the NATO Science & Technology Organization (STO) Excellence Award, was announced at a recent meeting in Lillehammer, Norway. It recognises Dr Petroccia’s key contributions to the NATO ‘IST-174’ Research Group’s mission to advance “Secure Underwater Communications for Heterogeneous Network-enabled Operations.” His work, carried out in collaboration with experts from Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, and Australia, as well as NATO scientists from CMRE in Italy, has been instrumental in enhancing the security of digital underwater communication systems. These advancements open the way for effective cooperation between manned and unmanned platforms in complex underwater environments. Dr Petroccia explained: "Underwater communication is inherently challenging. Interoperability is limited, and achieving secure, reliable systems requires collaboration across academia, government, and industry. No single organisation can solve these issues alone.” He added: "This recognition is the cherry on the cake, but what matters most is seeing our recommendations driving new initiatives across NATO and national labs. I’m proud to contribute to this critical field." #WeAreNATO🇮🇹

"The ability to work with other researchers, other scientists, other engineers on completely different problems, and understand the issues that they're trying to tackle, enables us to think about how we can apply their problems or their solutions to the current work we're doing." Luke Gallantree, Senior Principal Engineer at Dstl, speaks about his experience working with the NATO STO ⤵️
