Why Recycling Clothes is So Challenging – Part 2 Terracle has successfully developed polyester recycling technology, but we can't do it alone. Recycling clothes requires not only technology but also a robust system and collaboration. Here's why: 1️⃣ Lack of Clothing Recycling Infrastructure The European Union (EU) plans to mandate the separate collection of textile waste starting in 2025. Member states must establish systems for reusing and recycling textiles by January 1, 2025. However, even the EU, a leader in sustainability, currently lacks significant clothing recycling infrastructure. Do you have partners who can supply textile waste? 2️⃣ The Challenge of Sorting Collecting discarded clothing is just the beginning. Sorting textiles by type and blend is a major hurdle. Right now, the only reliable way to identify materials is by checking clothing labels. While AI and robotics-based sorting solutions are being developed, accurately separating blended fabrics and complex textile structures remains difficult. 💡 Terracle’s selective depolymerization technology can filter out other materials and extract polyester raw materials, even if the fabric isn’t 100% polyester. 3️⃣ Removing Accessories and Trims Even after identifying recyclable fibers, removing zippers, buttons, and other trims from clothing is another challenge. Currently, this labor-intensive process is done manually, with no efficient alternatives available. Terracle is eager to collaborate with partners worldwide to solve this issue. Do you have innovative ideas or solutions in this area? Although Terracle is based in Korea, we’re ready to work with partners anywhere in the world. Or, if you have textile waste, you’re welcome to send it to us! ♻️ We’re looking for partners to create a sustainable future together with Terracle.

Why Recycling Clothes is So Challenging – Part 1 1️⃣ Too Many Types of Fibers, Too Many Blends Fibers are categorized into natural, semi-synthetic, and synthetic, depending on their source. More specifically, they include cotton, wool, polyester, polyurethane, nylon, and dozens more. To enhance or balance each material's properties, fibers are often blended together—and these blends are intricately woven to prevent easy separation. 2️⃣ Dyeing Dyeing processes use a variety of chemicals and techniques to ensure that colors stay vibrant, even after washing or friction. The main goal is to make the colors long-lasting and resistant to fading, which makes separating dyes from fibers incredibly difficult. 👉 The Result? Recycling clothes requires advanced technology, akin to trying to pierce a steel shield with a wooden spear. That’s because most existing technologies were developed with the goal of producing garments, not recycling them. ✨ Terracle’s Challenge At Terracle, we’ve focused on polyester—the most widely produced fiber in the world. Despite the complexities of blended fabrics and dyeing, we’ve successfully developed technology to break polyester down into its original raw materials: TPA and EG. ♻️ Are you ready to join Terracle in shaping the future of textile recycling? #TextileRecycling #CircularEconomy #SustainableFashion #Sustainability #PolyesterRecycling #ChemicalRecycling

🇰🇷 South Korea is a very important country for scaling textile to textile recycling technologies, especially synthetic fibers, both from corporation and startup sides. South Korea is close to Asian textile supply chain and is one of the main petrochemical producing countries and license manufacturing technologies to adjacent countries like China and Vietnam. 🏭 Corporations - Hyosung Corporation has a wide range of sustainable products including recycled nylon using discarded fishing nets. In June 2024, Hyosung partnered with Ambercycle to produce textile-to-textile circular polyester. - SK Innovation (Subsidiary: SK Geocentric) partnered with Loop Industries to build a plant that will come online by end of 2025. This facility is expected to produce 70,000 tonnes of 100% recycled PET resin annually. 🚀 Startups - Terracle can depolymerize PET textile waste into high-purity TPA and MEG monomers. This year, Terracle raised $7.6M series A led by Envisioning Partners and followed by Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차), DSC Investment, Schmidt and more. - Renew System acquired low-temperature PET depolymerization technology from KRICT (Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology) and currently operates a demo plant of 10,000 tonnes/year capacity in Korea. - TextileRe can separate PET from blended textile waste and they recently raised seed round participated by MYSC, TheVentures and more. - RPU (리피유) can depolymerize PU, PA and spandex from mixed textile waste at low reaction temperature.
