We’ve already written about how modern technologies positively impact sports. In particular, the VAR (video assistant referee) system helped increase the number of correct decisions during football matches from 93% to 98,3%. That’s why we share more information about the system and its improvements over time. Nowadays, the VAR system helps to monitor and might change four categories of in-game referees: - Goal/no-goal - Penalty/no-penalty - Direct red card decision - Identity mistakes in yellow and red card awarding VAR was originally developed under the guidance of the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) as part of the Reffeering 2.0 project. The first few models included only a few cameras around the stadium and one human operator called assistant video assistant referee (AVAR) monitoring matches from a separate room. This system was tested during mock trial matches of the 2012-2013 season of the Eredivisie. The first model of the VAR system was authorized to perform double-checking only after in-game referee direct requests. As time passed, more well-known competitions and football leagues began to show interest in the system. Respectively, the VAR system expands and currently consists of 42 cameras (including slow and ultra-slow motion) and three AVARS, each assigned to monitor different stadium parts.
