Waterloo attracted more than $247 million from public and private sources in 2019-2020 to fund research across a spectrum of challenges, and is home to: -Over 30 University and senate-approved centres and institutes -74 Canada Research Chairs -Two Canada 150 Research Chairs -One Canada Excellence Research Chair and two Canada Excellence Research Chair Laureates For 13 years in a row, the University of Waterloo has been recognized as Research University of the Year among Canadian comprehensive universities by Research Infosource Inc.

I am pleased to announce that the University of Waterloo is a recipient of the 2025 Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee scholarship. Congratulations to Waterloo International on securing funding to execute their project - Beyond Borders: Co-Learning to Tackle Climate Change and Plastic Pollution for Resilient Communities in Africa, in Egypt and Ghana. This experiential field course will give University of Waterloo undergraduate students opportunities to study the interconnected challenges of plastic pollution in coastal communities, the drivers of global and regional climate change, and efforts to build adaptive local capacity and resilience, with local communities, stakeholders, and experts. The goal is to improve response methods tackling pollution through bottom-up stakeholder engagement and locally appropriate action. Building local resilience to climate change must contend with plastic pollution impacts and through this academic diplomacy activity, students will gain awareness and leadership skills to become global change agents. I am thrilled to congratulate Dr. Jimmy Lin who has been named a 2024 Fellow of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). Notably, he is the first at the University of Waterloo to receive this honour. In recognition of his significant contributions to question answering and information retrieval, Dr. Lin - professor and Cheriton Chair at Waterloo’s Cheriton School of Computer Science - is one of nine researchers worldwide to receive this distinction. He builds tools to help users make sense of large amounts of data by working at the intersection of information retrieval, natural language processing, and data management. Established in 2011, ACL fellowships are conferred annually to members whose contributions to the field have been extraordinary through their scientific and technical excellence, service to the association and the community, along with broader educational and outreach activities. The University of Waterloo is excited to share that 22 researchers across five faculties have been awarded more than $10 million through the Ontario Research Fund (ORF) to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time. This funding supports projects that span sustainable 3D printing, 6G network advancements, and greener, more efficient electric vehicles—all with the goal of driving innovation and creating a brighter future. In addition to the ORF Research Excellence funding, 18 researchers received Research Infrastructure funding to advance innovative projects across health, environment, engineering, science, and mathematics.
