🙌The 2024 FTMS conference came to a successful conclusion yesterday! Here are some key takeaways: ⚡The opening keynote with Dr. Ali Emadi allowed us to to understand some of the key gaps for EV adoption, including: high cost of production, lack of highly trained personnel, use of rare metals for electric propulsion motors, the inadequate electric infrastructure and more. ⚡Panel discussion on AI in the transportation sector with Geotab , General Motors , and BlackBerry we learnt that AI boosts productivity by enhancing efficiency and reimagining processes, with GenAI enabling on-demand insights and predictive maintenance. Human oversight remains crucial to prevent errors like "AI hallucinations," ensuring AI supports, not replaces, decision-making. ⚡The conversation with PowerCo Canada Inc. and Linamar Innovation Hub (iHub) highlighted that Canada has strong early-stage innovation but needs better commercialization support. Skilled trades and flexible training, especially in battery production, are crucial for growth. Initiatives like OVIN’s incubators and microcredentials help address skill gaps. ⚡The session with Auper Motorcycles , Cyberworks Robotics Inc. , and Westhill Innovation Inc was a unique take from the innovators themselves. Startups advancing electrification and autonomous industries face financial, technical, and market challenges, including resource access and complex tech integration. Partnerships are essential for growth, but aligning with the right partner can become a determining factor of a startups success. ⚡Finally, Flavio Volpe, C.M. from Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association (APMA), the final keynote presentation, discussed the political and economic impacts on the EV industry, emphasizing the need for affordable solutions in North America despite its early lead. He also provided updates on Project Arrow, Canada’s first zero emissions concept vehicle.
