About us
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the study of machines and software that exhibit intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, planning, problem-solving, predicting, and the use of language and vision. With the advent of big data, and driven by the explosion of computing capacity and speed, AI tools are being increasingly integrated into technological solutions that are central to our everyday life, business, society, and the environment. Since launching in 2018, Waterloo.ai's multidisciplinary research teams have been collaborating with industry to develop intelligent systems in areas such as disease detection and treatment, understanding language and emotion, vehicle navigation, and ensuring fairness and equity in such systems. Our projects are building tomorrow's intelligent systems today, translating industrial requirements into deployable AI. In years to come, we expect this investment to yield profound dividends for the economic prosperity and quality of life of people all around the world. And we are just getting started.

Waterloo Data & Artificial Intelligence Institute reposted this
Absolutely delighted that the AI for Society course I have been working on, along with several faculty members and graduate students, is now complete and has been released to the University of Waterloo community. This was a project that was conceptualized with UW President Vivek Goel and has now come to fruition. A write up is available here https://lnkd.in/gRsCfp3v. The online course consists of an introductory module on the basics of AI and Machine Learning and nine other modules that discuss various societal implications of the presence of these technologies in our day to day lives through the lens of engineers, computer scientists, humanists, social scientists, and health experts. As I am quoted in the article; “AI technology is reshaping how we live, work and learn and it’s essential that our community is equipped to engage with these changes responsibly,” says Dr. Anindya Sen, acting executive director for the Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute (CPI) and a member of Waterloo Data and AI, who led the development of AI for Society. “This course is for anyone impacted by AI — not just future technologists but anyone who interacts with AI-driven systems, from health-care applications to educational tools. It also emphasizes the implications for individual privacy and the challenges posed by the massive datasets fueling AI.” The course was developed with support from UWaterloo Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute, Waterloo Data & Artificial Intelligence Institute and the university's Trust Network. In the future, I hope to release a version of this course to the entire country, as the University of Helsinki did with its "Elements of AI" course. Truly grateful to my wonderful colleagues Mark Crowley, Kami Vaniea, Sirisha Rambhatla, Plinio Morita, PhD MSc PEng, Anita Layton, Zahid Butt, Clemens Possnig, Patricia Marino, Mathieu Doucet, Carla Fehr, Samantha Meyer, Helen Chen, Diogo Barradas, Shubhankar Mohapatry, Xi He, Yaoliang Yu, Yiwei Lu, and Bing Hu for working so hard on this and making it happen. A shout out to Mary Wells and Ashley Rose M. for their strong support through the entire process and most of all to Bronwyn Korb, course designer "Extraordinaire" and her team for their dedication and many, many hours of work for making this come come to life.
