In mass timber construction, topping off looks a little different than normal — it’s not the last pour of concrete but the installation of the final mass timber piece! 🎉 On November 29, 2024, we reached an incredible milestone, with Ironworkers Local 97 placing the symbolic last CLT piece on this one-of-a-kind, iconic building. Although the last CLT piece is in place, there’s still a year of construction ahead of us. With collaboration and determination, we’re ready to tackle the next phase and complete this fantastic project. 💪 A huge thank you to:

We are proud to showcase the completed project of X'welmchsten. 🎉 The Xwemelch’stn Housing Project is a First Nations housing initiative in collaboration with Hiyam Housing Society and BC Housing, located on Squamish Nation land on the North Shore under the Lions Gate Bridge and adjacent to the Spirit Trail. This development features a 4-storey wood-frame apartment building with a one-level underground parkade, two townhouse buildings, and an attached mass timber commercial retail unit. Aimed at providing housing for people in the surrounding First Nations reserve as a priority, this project is part of the Squamish Nation’s vision of “bringing Squamish people home,” with the objective to house every Squamish person within 25 years. Cultural design elements include feature cladding with native artwork, glass guardrail ceramic patterning, vibrant colours from the Squamish Nation identity palette, and a landscape design developed through community engagement featuring indigenous plants and locally sourced furnishings. Community spaces include a ground-level amenities room, communal kitchen, shared laundry facilities, a communal garden, a kids’ outdoor play space, and a mass timber CRU building that will eventually host a community grocery store, café, and gathering spot for the wider neighbourhood. Another step forward in creating inclusive, community-centred housing that celebrates Squamish Nation culture and brings people home! 🏡✨
