On behalf of the DEIB Committee of TRO, we extend our warmest wishes to all celebrating Kwanzaa—a meaningful seven-day celebration (December 26th – January 1st) honouring African heritage in African American culture. Rooted in the traditions of the African harvest season, the name Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” meaning “first fruits of the harvest.” This time of year is an opportunity to reflect on the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa: Unity (Umoja), Self-Determination (Kujichagulia), Collective Work and Responsibility (Ujima), Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa), Purpose (Nia), Creativity (Kuumba), and Faith (Imani). May this Kwanzaa bring joy, reflection, and connection, and may its message of hope guide us into the new year.

This Christmas, we reflect on the timeless teachings of Jesus Christ—love, compassion, and kindness for all. His message reminds us of the importance of embracing diversity, fostering equity, and creating spaces where everyone feels a sense of belonging. May this season inspire us to extend grace and generosity to one another, celebrate the beauty of our differences, and work together toward a more inclusive and caring world. Wishing you and your loved ones a holiday filled with peace, joy, and love. Merry Christmas!

International Migrants Day reminds us of the vital role migrants play in shaping and enriching our societies. Despite their resilience and invaluable contributions, many migrants continue to face barriers to inclusion and equity. In recreation therapy, we celebrate offering culturally relevant opportunities and creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels they belong. Let us celebrate the strength diversity brings to our communities and stand in solidarity with migrants as we work toward a future where all are welcomed and valued. On December 10, we observe Human Rights Day in Canada, a day dedicated to recognizing and protecting the fundamental rights of all people. In the field of Recreation Therapy, this day serves as a reminder of the power of inclusive and accessible recreation in promoting mental, emotional, and physical well-being for individuals of all abilities. Recreation therapists work to create environments where everyone, regardless of their background or challenges, can experience dignity, respect, and empowerment. Today, let's celebrate the right to leisure, healing, and community for all. #HumanRightsDay #RecreationTherapy #InclusionMatters
