Today, Nov. 12, marked the vibrant start of the #Alberta #Robotics and #Intelligent #Systems #Expo (Alberta RISE 2024). The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Simaan AbouRizk, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Alberta. The day featured insightful keynotes from Dr. M. Ali Nasseri and Dr. Vivian Mushahwar, engaging oral and poster presentations by paper authors, and three interactive workshops. Exciting to share our latest development: an end-to-end solution for fabricating timber frames! Our RoBIM simulator offers an intuitive user interface for robotic process planning without the need for programming expertise. While it hasn’t exactly been a secret, our new company, RoBIM Technologies Inc., is coming out of stealth mode. We started RoBIM to target the multi-trillion-dollar global construction industry which is facing major labour shortages and productivity challenges.  Robotics and automation can be powerful solutions and we are combining recent advancements in AI and computer simulation with falling hardware costs to develop disruptive and proprietary robotic fabrication methods. “Ro” is for Robotics and “BIM” is for Building Information Modelling and for the past three years we have been building a product platform with four parts. First, we've developed software that simulates robotic fabrication of a construction component imported from a BIM model and, in turn, the software automatically generates robotic programming codes.  Second, we're building an ever-growing library of robotic fabrication capabilities and end-effectors targeting the unique needs of the construction industry. Third, we will be building products for our customers at our robotic fabrication cell in Nisku, Alberta just south of Edmonton. Finally, we are building turnkey multi-functional, modular and scalable robotic systems for off-site or on-site fabrication of construction components. Our end-to-end proprietary solution (backed by five recently granted patents) is being designed to fabricate a wide-range of construction components which will ultimately reduce the need for human labour on construction sites, lower project costs and shorten schedules. A recent turning point for us was the successful completion of a development project to robotically fabricate wall panels used for exterior retrofits of commercial buildings. This project, supported by Alberta Innovates, allowed us to advance 11 new robotic capabilities and build three processing end-effector tools which can be used to fabricate a wide range of component used in a construction project. We have much more to come with future product launches but to date I need to give sincere thanks to our incredibly talented Edmonton-based team (Cheng-Hsuan (Jason) Yang and Liang-Ting (Tim) Tsai) and our other original co-founders (Jessy Kang, Ci-Jyun Liang and Shang-Hsien Hsieh). Welcome our newest member, Runfeng Tian, to the RoBIM team! Runfeng is a summer intern student from the University of Alberta. He will work on the development of the robot system and its functionality, as well as help RoBIM test the fabrication process of timber-based retrofit panels in the factory. Welcome onboard!
