Our lead mental health facilitator, Liz VandenBygaart, was honoured to facilitate a pilot Mental Health First Aid workshop with a group of Soublière Constructors foremen in December 2023. We just found out that one of the participating leaders added his "MHFAer" sticker to his hard hat to let his fellow crew know that he is ready and willing to be there for any support they might need. Talk about walking the talk! #leadership #walkthetalk #mensmentalhealth #mentalhealthfirstaider

What does mental health have to do with Valentine's Day? February 14 can come with outsized expectations, stress, anxiety, and the 'not enough' stuff. You might feel isolated, shunned, neglected, invisible, or unworthy (remember the kids who didn't get the Be-Mine cards???). Love is more than an annual exchange of chocolates, roses, and paper hearts. It's time we challenge our narrow definitions of love to be more expansive, inclusive, compassionate, and community-oriented. The same goes for mental health. Challenging our conventional, often stigmatizing, narratives about mental health and psychological safety takes love. Check out my recent conversation with Angie Seth and get curious about your relationship with love, mental health, and our expectations of both. #mentalhealth #valentinesday #loveislove #leadership

Wise words from a client of ours, Revelios.
“You’re so busy! What do you do in your spare time?” I hear this a lot, and I'm moderately allergic to it. The notion of ‘spare time’ is tricky, and it might be contributing to your suboptimal mental health. It implies that 'work' time is meaningful, and other time is not. It implies that your ‘meaningless’ (aka spare) time is used for your passion projects, creative pursuits, community service, family and friends, and activities to support your physical and emotional well-being. Spare change = the stuff jangling around your purse or pockets that you can easily do without. Spare time = the time spent ‘not working,’ filling the hours between work. It's time to change this narrative. Time is time is time is time. Your time is your LIFE. Your time at work can be fulfilling and creative and humane and energizing and innovative. Your time away from work, when cultivated and nurtured with reverence and deliberate choices, can add immeasurable value to your life, including your work life. My deliberate choices often include napping, watching a favourite show (football playoffs!), reading a book, walking a dog, playing with a baby, cooking a meal, going out to dinner, exploring your neighbourhood, making music, moving, and spending a Sunday afternoon a making music video with awesome humans (see photo). Being mindful in every moment allows us to see time holistically, without judgment. “Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” ― John Lubbock, The Use Of Life It’s a mindset shift that can change our lives for the better. When you read this, what comes to mind? What might you do next?

Our recent leadership surveys confirmed that mental health is a concept that means different things to different people. If you want a healthier, more inclusive workplace this year, improve mental health literacy first. Lack of mental health literacy often results in: Stigma and Discrimination: - Misunderstanding of mental health issues may contribute to stigma - Discrimination against individuals with mental health challenges Reduced Employee Well-being: - Lack of awareness about mental health may result in undetected issues - Limited access to appropriate support and resources Increased Absenteeism: - Employees may be more likely to take sick leave due to unaddressed mental health concerns - Higher rates of absenteeism due to mental health-related issues Impaired Performance and Productivity: - Unrecognized mental health issues may impact cognitive function and job performance - Reduced productivity and efficiency among employees facing mental health challenges Limited Help-Seeking Behavior: - Employees may be hesitant to seek help due to a lack of understanding or fear of judgment - Delayed or inadequate treatment for mental health issues Poor Team Dynamics: - Lack of mental health awareness can contribute to misunderstanding among team members - Reduced cohesion and collaboration within teams Risk of Burnout: - Failure to recognize and address stressors and burnout - Increased likelihood of employees experiencing burnout Negative Impact on Employee Engagement: - Employees may feel unsupported in their mental health needs - Decreased engagement and commitment to the organization Legal and Ethical Concerns: - Failure to meet legal obligations related to mental health support in the workplace - Ethical concerns related to neglecting the mental well-being of employees Financial Costs for the Organization: - Increased healthcare costs associated with untreated mental health issues - Productivity losses and increased turnover resulting in financial implications for the organization Decreased Organizational Reputation: - Negative perceptions from employees and external stakeholders regarding the organization's approach to mental health - Difficulty attracting and retaining top talent due to a poor reputation Impact on Diversity and Inclusion: - Limited efforts to create an inclusive environment for individuals with mental health challenges - Decreased diversity and inclusion due to a lack of support for employees with diverse mental health needs You need more than a robust EAP and unlimited time off. Integrating mental health literacy throughout the daily work experience involves meaningful learning, relevant and regular application, and a measurable, sustainable strategy. It also means honestly looking at organizational practices and leadership behaviours that enable or prevent well-being. If you can’t talk about it, you can’t fix it. #mentalhealthawareness #endthestigma #mindfulness #psychologicalsafety
