  • Can a film and a conversation change the world? We think so after gathering Central Okanagan philanthropists, wealth managers, and nonprofit leaders for a special Cinema for Social Impact event this fall. In October, Purppl and Trellis.org rolled out the red carpet – literally – for this curated group to discuss how outdated views on nonprofit “overhead” stifle potential for massive impact. The goal: to change mindsets in order to change the culture of charitable giving in the region. Over a sumptuous meal, guests watched the documentary UnCharitable, along with a short film we created localizing the issues with interviews from local nonprofit leaders. Then, those same leaders led table discussions about these five key takeaways: Compensation: The societal belief that making money in the nonprofit sector is immoral drives talent away. Paying competitive wages attracts skilled professionals and strengthens organizations. Marketing and Advertising: Investing in marketing is not wasteful; it raises awareness and grows donations, ultimately benefiting the cause more. Risk and Innovation: Charities are discouraged from taking risks, which stifles innovation and limits their ability to grow and scale. Time Horizon: Unlike for-profit ventures, nonprofits are pressured to deliver immediate results. Long-term strategies could lead to much larger, sustainable impacts. Access to Capital: The inability to offer financial returns cuts nonprofits off from large investment pools, hampering their ability to scale ambitious projects. The event was a beautiful celebration of the critical role nonprofits play in our community and a call to rethink philanthropy for greater impact. • At Purppl, we believe the hiring process should reflect the role’s unique responsibilities. For entry-level positions, a simple process with one or two interviews may be sufficient, while senior roles might require multiple stages, panel interviews, or case studies that simulate real challenges. Tailoring the process ensures candidates are evaluated on what truly matters for the position while respecting their time and effort. It’s about creating a thoughtful experience that aligns with the demands of the role. Curious how to design a hiring process that’s equitable and role-specific? Our People & Operations lead, Domenica Chieffo shares more insights in her latest blog: https://hubs.la/Q02_mlSz0 #InclusiveHiring #Equity #TailoredHiring #Purppl #SocialImpact

At Thrive, we see a lot of potential for acquisitions as an impact-furthering, revenue-generating option. This article outlines the opportunities and what to think about when considering an acquisition. Some specific considerations to highlight from our experience: - do not make an offer until you have done your due diligence - assess the market and revenue potential based on future projections and your vision, not the past (it can be a guide but not a predictor) - be prepared to be hands on for the first couple/few years… and ensure you have capacity for this - focus on the revenue Thriving Non-Profits has recently launched Social Enterprise Acquisitions course, which provides a step by step roadmap to acquisitions. And when you need financing and support, let’s talk!

  • Social finance in action! 🙌 As co-owner of Thrive Impact Fund, we're proud to be able to support social entrepreneurs like Lindsay Harris and the Propolis Cooperative Housing Society community to access flexible, patient financing to move their vision forward of cooperatively owned, affordable, net-zero multi-family housing in the Kamloops region. Imagine the ripple effects of secure housing for this community! What could your organization do with a friendly loan? How might that investment scale your impact?

We were thrilled to have you join our portfolio, Lindsay Harris and Propolis Cooperative Housing Society, and oddly, thrilled to have you go! Because, your exit (graduation?) from Thrive's portfolio means it worked! It means that your intention and actions are meeting a community need, that the short-term bridge provided time and space to raise community bonds, and that Thrive's network of investors, connections and support made a difference. And the success isn't the repayment of the loan (though that matters too), but that a group of Kamloops citizens were supported to help solve a massive challenge, and although there is still a long road ahead, affordable and community owned housing is coming into view. Thank you for sharing your experience and reflections with Thrive's Morgan Brannon. What a great way to close out 2024 :) Happy Holidays All. 🎄 Thank you to the partners, directors, investors, impact investment committee and entrepreneurs making change happen. 💛 Kristi Rivait (she/her) Andrew Greer Wendy Cooper Ian Johnson, CFA Eugene L.
