🔍 Tariffs on the Table: Who’s Eating the Cost in Food Supply Chains? Sharing more views from the PLMA - Private Label Manufacturers Association show last week in #Chicago, one topic dominated the conversations: the potential impact of new tariffs on the food industry. With many exhibitors eyeing U.S. retailers, the big question remains—who will ultimately bear the cost? While opinions vary, here are some key considerations that emerged: 1️⃣ Availability of Alternatives: Many products rely on international sourcing due to limited domestic supply, cost advantages, or innovation. Are U.S.-based substitutes even feasible? 2️⃣ Implementation Details: How will these tariffs be applied to imported ingredients or packaging? A key consideration for domestic suppliers. 3️⃣ Timing Challenges: Shifting suppliers is complex and time-consuming. Will buyers start to hedge their decisions in anticipation of new tariffs? 4️⃣ Who Pays? High-margin products: Suppliers may absorb costs initially, but they’ll likely pass them on to retailers over time. Low-margin products: The cost increase will reach consumers much faster. 5️⃣ Inflation Concerns: Rising prices will only add pressure to already high costs. 6️⃣ U.S. Manufacturing: These tariffs may push C-suites to reconsider capital allocation strategies to favour domestic production—but at what pace? 💡 What’s missing? How do you see these tariffs shaping industry decisions and consumer behavior? Share your thoughts below—we’re all navigating this together. #PrivateLabel #SupplyChain #RetailTrends #PLMAShow2024 Power Sustainable Lios Jonathan Belair, James Rickert, Andy J. Park
