A global alliance of people with Parkinson’s, our partners and friends, united to add urgency to the cause of ending PD.
About us
Our mission is to build a global alliance to end Parkinson’s. It's been more than 200 years since Dr. Parkinson's first describe the symptoms of this disorder. In that time, humanity has put man on the moon, eradicated polio, changed HIV from a death sentence to a chronic illness, has mapped the human genome; and yet, has provided precious little beyond that one fifty-year-old drug for Parkinson’s. We are tired of it. Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological disease on earth. It is growing faster than Alzheimer’s, faster than ALS, MS and stroke. At its current pace 1 in 15 people alive today will be diagnosed with Parkinson’s. More than 10 million people in the world have Parkinson’s representing every continent, every people group and all ages. It is indiscriminate, progressive, and degenerative. Parkinson’s is a life sentence of being trapped in a body that increasingly refuses to obey commands. According to a 2018 report in The Lancet, neurological disorders are now the leading source of disability globally. Among neurological disorders examined in the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2015, Parkinson's disease was the fastest growing in prevalence, disability, and deaths. In that study, the overall number of people affected by the disease was estimated to have more than doubled globally from 1990 to 2015. source: https://doi.org/10.1016/S1474-4422(18)30295-3 The PD Avengers was inspired to action by the book Ending Parkinson's Disease. We are founded on a "Think Global, Act Local" philosophy and the three pillars: Wellness, Advocacy, and Research. We believe every person with Parkinson’s should have equitable access to information, medication and therapies. We believe we must build a loud, uncomfortable, ever-present voice demanding change in how the disease is seen and treated. We believe patients are integral in every aspect of research in the search for better treatments and ending Parkinson’s.

World Parkinson Coalition's “Parkinson Ready” program to address these challenges for people with Parkinson's. While this program was initially offered only to cities that are selected to host our triennial World Parkinson Congresses, it is now being piloted in Vancouver, BC, Canada and Philadelphia, PA, USA to see how the training can be utilized by any city interested in driving up awareness and building up a more inclusive and accessible city workforce to support residents and tourists to the city. The program aims to: 🌟Help the city better support residents and visitors with Parkinson's disease (PD). 🌟Prepare leaders in key industries to understand and assist those with PD. 🌟Equip frontline city workers with the knowledge to confidently support the PD community. 🌟Foster lasting alliances between local advocates and the service industry. This Parkinson Ready program helps the host city welcome delegates and is a great way to showcase the friendliness and hospitality of the city – for ALL travellers, those with movement disabilities and others. When the program concludes this knowledge remains with all those who were trained and they can then use this new information with future guests to their hotels, meeting centers, on their trains, in their taxis and beyond. Check out this Video to help YOU understand the initiative of this program! #parkinsoncoalition #parkinsonready #pdavengers #safety #parkinson
