  • NEWS RELEASE: written by Lynn Thomas Check out the new article in Orillia Matters regarding NSVS recent rise in calls. https://lnkd.in/gNB87J-W Exerpt: "We all have read stories or watched movies at this festive time of year that include quiet visits to our homes to bring seasonal joy to the family who dwells there. What if those quiet visitors were there to bring comfort, support, compassion and resources in your greatest hour of need? North Simcoe Victim Services (NSVS) crisis responders do just that in those moments that your world is shattered. For women and often their children experiencing a prolonged period of intimate partner violence that are able to escape this cruel reality, to victims of tragic circumstances such as devastating fires, MVAs (motor vehicle accidents), to the shock and pain of a sudden and unexpected death in your circle of loved ones, NSVS responders and staff work around the clock to reassure community members that they are not alone. This kind of “gift” is given over and over again confidentially, without seeking accolades or public attention, at no cost to the victims of crime, trauma and tragic circumstances in our community." • NSVS are very thankful to all of the guests that braved the snow storm on November 30 to support our "FashionTEAsta" Fundraiser. We enjoyed live music by The Pheonix Jazz Ensemble, heard a testimonial from a former victim, shopped at the "FashionTEA Boutique" & an incredible Raffle table of beautiful items, and enjoyed a delicious high tea lunch all in a beautiful setting decorated for Christmas. Fundraising events like this are crucial to helping NSVS continue to give support, services, emergency accomodation, personal security items, meals & Victim care kits to the community members we respond to in our region. • North Simcoe Victim Services team members were honoured to stand along side our community partner, Green Haven shelter to mark the National Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. November 25, we attended the " Wrapped in Courage" Flag Raising, a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight to end gender-based violence in our community and beyond. Every 10 minutes, a woman is killed by an intimate partner or family member. (United Nations, 2024) Intimate Partner Violence is the #1 type of call that NSVS responds to, and 98% of those calls are for women victims. The flag raising symbolizes our collective commitment to supporting survivors and taking action against the root causes of violence. #NationalDayToEndViolence #16DaysOfActivism #WrappedInCourage #EndGenderBasedViolence #SupportSurvivors #TogetherForChange #EndGBV #16daysofactivismagainstgenderbasedviolence #crisisresponse #caringsupport

  • Black Friday is past, Santa came to town in Orillia today... Time to consider how you can give a gift that makes a lasting impact in our community! 🎄🎁 The holiday season is not always happy for people in our community. Becoming a victim can happen to anyone at unexpected moments. North Simcoe Victim Services support victims of tragic circumstances at no cost to the victim and their loved ones. This year alone, we have supported 782 people in the region. Since we began our services in 1999, our crisis responders have gone out to 9353 calls with approx. 40% of those calls in the past 5 years!! Our calls continue to increase sadly. Recently, the County of Simcoe terminated our contract for the motel voucher program preferring a centralized system through 211 prioritizing families, leaving seniors, or single vulnerable victims without emergency accommodation. In order to provide for these increasing needs, we need your support for as little as $10/month, you will be helping your neighbour, friend, colleague, family in their hour of need. GIFT #1 - Become a "SAVE" (Support Advocate for Victim Empowerment) Donor for any amount you wish and recieve one of our NSVS Branded FOX 40 whistles for FREE! GIFT #2 - Donate $20 per FOX 40 whistle for the fishing/ice fishing, hunting, sports enthusiast on your list or for personal safety, just as we give whistles to victims for security purposes. Pick up at NSVS office at Orillia OPP Detachment, 1 University Ave #holidaycampaign #giftgiving #donate #SAVEdonor #Christmas #stockingstuffer #fundraising #crisisresponse #caringsupport #nsvs #victim

  • The Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Roundtable was well attended, with many community members interested in finding out more about this very difficult topic, how to identify signs of IPV, and discussion about education and future elimination of IPV. Thank you to our community partner Green Haven Shelter for Women for helping to facilitate the event. Last month was the highest number of calls for our NSVS Crisis Responders & Staff with over 150 clients supported, and 1/3 of those calls being for Intimate Partner Violence. Thank you to Senator Gwen Boniface for moderating our panel of experts in this field. We appreciated hearing from a former victim of decades of IPV and her personal journey out of the cycle of trauma; Sher McNulty of Green Haven Women's shelter ; Olivia Madden,MSW, BSW representing, Regional Sexual Assault & Domestic.Violence Treatment Centre; Tanya Tremble OPP Detective Sergeant; and Dawn Richard's, RN SANE program. Thank you to @mariposa_market for providing our refreshments for all of our guests!
