Updates

  • The holidays are a perfect time for rest and renewal. Christmas trees remind us of the need to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life. One of the best things about natural Christmas trees is that they can be planted annually for future holiday seasons. A plastic tree produces around 16 times more carbon dioxide than a real one and it can't be recycled. You’d have to use a plastic tree for 20-25 years for it to have a carbon footprint similar to a natural tree. Plus, the municipality's Solid Waste team takes care of the discarded trees after the holiday season, using them to improve the composting process. Choosing a real tree from a local source also has benefits for biodiversity by providing habitat for wildlife. Help keep our forests healthy by choosing the greener option this holiday. And learn more about how we're protecting the health of our forests - halifax.ca/biodiversity.

Follow along as Jerid and Tamar, members of the municipality’s Diversity & Inclusion team, do a walk-through of the three newly named streets. These names were included in the commemorative names list and were approved by Regional Council on Sept. 3, 2024.   Learn more at: halifax.ca/cogswell

  • In the sixth HalifACT community update, the municipality is pleased to spotlight some of the ways we've been investing in a future of sustainable growth. Renewable energy from a Nova Scotian wind farm, net-zero-ready buildings, consensus-based watershed management and healthier methods of transportation are just some of the ways we're moving toward a greener future. Find out how we're cutting emissions, working with nature and adapting to the impacts of climate change at halifax.ca/halifactupdate.
