  • An exciting moment for the spinal cord injury (SCI) community as ONWARD Medical has received FDA approval for the world’s first non-invasive spinal cord stimulation system, the ARC-EX®.  The hospital’s Scientific Program Lead, Dr. Jessica D'Amico, was a part of an international group of researchers who supported the May 2024 publication of the Up-LIFT Trial, examining the safety and effectiveness of ARC-EX® therapy. With the support of the foundation and ONWARD Medical, Dr. D’Amico is excited to continue this work at the Glenrose and hopes to bring some of these devices to the hospital in the new year, supporting both SCI patients and other patient populations, including those recovering from stroke.

🎉 Today marks a truly historic moment – not just for our company, but for the entire spinal cord injury (SCI) community.  After more than a decade of pioneering research and unwavering dedication, we have received FDA De Novo classification and authorization to market the ARC-EX® System, the world's first non-invasive spinal cord stimulation system proven to improve strength and sensation after chronic SCI. 💫 Here are some key highlights of the ARC-EX System: ⭐️ 90% of clinical trial participants showed improved strength or function* in clinical trials ⭐️ Benefits seen up to 34 years post-injury* in clinical trials ⭐️ Named a Time Magazine Best Invention of 2024 For the first time ever, there is an approved therapy to improve hand strength and sensation for people with SCI. This recognition is particularly meaningful because it acknowledges more than just technological innovation – it validates the benefits of this therapy for the millions of people worldwide who dream of regaining movement and independence after SCI. We thank the entire SCI Community for supporting us in our journey to develop and introduce this breakthrough technology. Together, we are not just developing devices; we are reshaping what is possible after spinal cord injury. 🚀 🔗 For more details, read our press release (link in comments).  *Moritz, Chet, et al. “Non-invasive spinal cord stimulation for arm and hand function in chronic tetraplegia: a safety and efficacy trial.” Nature Medicine. 2024. #EmpoweringMovement #SCI #MedicalBreakthrough #Innovation  Note: The ARC-EX System is intended to deliver programmed, transcutaneous electrical spinal cord stimulation in conjunction with functional task practice in the clinic to improve hand sensation and strength in individuals between 18 and 75 years old that present with a chronic, non-progressive neurological deficit resulting from an incomplete spinal cord injury (C2-C8 inclusive). • After a car accident in his youth and over seventy surgeries, Joe was told he may never walk or work again ... until the Glenrose. His accident left him with severe injuries including a broken femur, fractured vertebrae, and a head injury, and at the young age of fourteen, he faced the daunting reality that life as he knew it would be changed forever. Joe’s visited the Glenrose four times to-date, for rehabilitation after a hip replacement, spinal cord fusion surgery, shoulder replacement, and most recently, he visited the hospital’s amputation rehabilitation program after hip disarticulation surgery – which removed his entire left leg through the hip joint – an incredibly rare surgery that makes up only 2% of amputations. An active individual, Joe aspired to return to some of his greatest joys: sailing, golfing, and most importantly, fulfilling his role as a grandpa. And the Glenrose helped him get there. 🔗 Read Joe’s story, and how the Glenrose continues to help him achieve his goals with the support of community members like you: https://lnkd.in/gxVuw9dZ ❤️ Consider making a donation before 2024 ends to support others like Joe on their journeys through rehabilitation. • Today is #GivingTuesday, a global movement dedicated to fostering community generosity. This holiday season, we’re excited to team up with the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital to bring some joy and comfort to children on their rehabilitation journeys.  Kristin Budney, child life specialist, shares the impact of small gifts for children like Albert and Weston during their hospital stay. Simple items, such as a VR headset, a giraffe plushie, and Lego sets bring joy and distraction, helping young patients feel less isolated and more at ease while recovering.   Your contributions to our wish list will not only bring smiles to children but also provide comfort and support during their stay. We invite you to make a meaningful impact by purchasing an item (or two!) from our wish list. Your generosity will directly support these brave kids along their journey through recovery and make their stay a little bit brighter. Together, we can help make the season warmer for those who need it most.   Any gift purchase over $20 is eligible for a tax receipt! Please send your receipts to info@glenrosefoundation.com. • Last month, our partners at BLINC Lab competed in the 2024 Cybathlon – an international competition that challenges teams world-wide to develop assistive technologies suitable for everyday use for persons with disabilities. And their team didn’t just compete – they finished in the Top 8 – putting Edmonton and Canada on the map amongst teams from France, China, and Italy. The lab’s BLINCdev team raced in the upper-limb prosthesis competition where their pilot, Chris Neilson, who has a transhumeral (above-the-elbow) amputation, used their Bento Arm technology to complete a series of competition tasks, including picking up and carrying weighted items, stacking, and hanging laundry, amongst others. The foundation is proud to support the BLINC Lab in this year’s competition, helping bring the future forward for life-changing assistive technologies. Congrats to the team on their recent success!
